Original parts Ford Transit Courier 2014-2018

Ford Transit Courier completes the transit line, which now covers the small, compact, standard, and large panel sectors; and although there are purists who do not appreciate the "dilution" of the Transit name, this varied line makes sense in the modern world. It is often said that "good things come in small packages," and this courier is very good. Considering its practicality, flexibility, and work appetite, the Courier is worthy of the Transit name.

At 1.9 cubic meters, the loading box is not immense, so if you want more space, then look at the Connect. The Courier is a small van for those with modest transport needs and is ideal for the urban environment. The loading length is a modest 1.6 meters, but this can be extended to 3.0 meters if the folding passenger seat is used to fit pipe lengths, timber, or ladders, and the space is sufficient to fit a euro pallet between the wheel arches.

With a roof height of 1,244 mm, there is enough space to slide in an upright washing machine, even if it is mounted on a pallet. For added flexibility, Ford offers a folding bulkhead that is hinged vertically in the middle. The "open" section can then be folded around the drivers seat, allowing the transport of longer and bulkier items up to 3.0 meters inside the vehicle. The load tie-down rings have been thoughtfully placed at the extreme corners of the loading space, with two more on the side wall, meaning they can be more easily accessed even with a full load on board.

At just 4.1 meters in length, the van itself is quite short, meaning it can be reversed close to a wall, leaving enough space to access the rear through either of the barns asymmetric doors without the vehicles nose being too far out. Its a small feature, but one suitable for couriers and traders working in congested city centers.

Interior

In the standard trims, the two front seats are quite comfortable, but if the optional folding passenger seat is provided to maximize loading space, then it offers more of a perch for the passenger than a seat. So, be careful what you specify. Cabin storage is quite good, with an over-windshield shelf complemented by reasonably sized door pockets and a shallow foundation tray; two holders can be placed next to the handbrake lever, and there are a few cubby holes for bouquets of keys or loose change.
On the rubber-covered floor, there are no detachable rubber mats, meaning it would be hard to keep the interior clean.

Running Costs
The official combined economy figure is 72.4 MPG, but in "real" motoring, it reached 55.5mpg. However, 60mpg and more can be easily achieved in a Courier, depending on the nature of the work required. Perhaps a sixth gear could further reduce consumption, but Ford decided on a five-speed gearbox for all variants, including the 1.0-liter petrol and both 1.5 and 1.6-liter diesel options. Service intervals are 20,000 km apart, there is a three-year / 100,000 km warranty, and insurance ratings are quite low.

Performance
The 1.5-liter four-cylinder Euro 5 turbodiesel is set to replace the 1.6 TDCi unit right in Fords diesel range. There is no noticeable difference in power delivery, and with 140lb/ft of torque, the power is more than adequate in a vehicle with a GVW of less than 1,800 kg. Its responsive power unit combines with agile handling to make it feel really quite nimble and a joy to drive.

Ride and Handling
Its a Ford, which means the Courier is a pleasure to drive. No surprise here, as Ford considers the "Tourneo" MPV version of all seats will appeal to families; and, the "commercial" version of the vehicle benefits from this, with good noise insulation and a firm but comfortable suspension with excellent damping even when running empty.

Safety
The full disc brake setup comes with ABS and ESC, and a drivers airbag is standard. In common with all Fords these days, the Courier comes with Fords SYNC system, which allows easier connection to other electronic devices and, more importantly, will automatically contact emergency services if it detects the vehicle has been involved in an accident. It may not be so much a safety issue, but worth mentioning, is the full-size spare wheel, which is always better for a commercial vehicle than the "seal and inflate" systems that are prevalent on modern cars. Auto headlights and fog lights were also fitted on the test vehicle we drove.

Equipment
Our test vehicle was the "Trend" version of the Courier and came with a leather-covered steering wheel with integrated audio and trip computer controls. The van also had front electric windows, heated door mirrors, and a heated windshield - a real boon on frosty mornings. In addition to the overly useful windshield shelf and other storage spaces, there is a drawer under the drivers seat to hide small valuables.  The DAB radio/CD/USB player is equipped with Bluetooth and (as mentioned above) Fords SYNC system, which will appeal to those of us who still have trouble getting electronic devices to communicate with each other! The drivers seat also has adjustable lumbar support and an armrest, while remote central locking and the fuel cap are also standard. Options fitted to the van included an upgraded DAB radio system with a 5.0-inch TFT screen and satellite, as well as a reverse camera, air conditioning, and glazed rear windows with wipers, all for a reasonable price of 650 euros. Metallic paint added another 300 euros; the folding mesh bulkhead and folding passenger seat were a very reasonable 200 euros; parking sensors cost 150 euros; and, although the LED load box light sounds a bit pricey at 40 euros, its worth every penny when the dark nights set in.
