Ford Tourneo Custom 2020: more powerful engines and new EcoBlue Hybrid technology

After quickly moving past the major phase in 2018, Ford brought several updates to the Ford Tourneo Custom for 2019, focused on further improving the engine range.

The main news here was the introduction of an even more powerful 185 HP / 415 Nm version of the 2.0-liter EcoBlue diesel. But, in fact, every Transit Custom is an upgrade, thanks to new turbochargers that provide more torque, plus improved injectors, new pistons, and an on-demand oil pump.

Ford should lead to real-world fuel economy.

Additionally, there is a new "mild hybrid electric vehicle" Transit Custom mHEV package, an option on some engines that adds a smart starter-generator system and a small lithium-ion battery pack, in an effort to save even more fuel. When equipped, these vans are environmentally friendly EcoBlue Hybrid.
Ford Tourneo Custom 2019 is also available with onboard Wi-Fi and some improved safety systems.

What is Ford Custom?
Introduced in 2012, Custom effectively split Fords traditional transit range in two - with Custom taking over the medium-sized or "one-ton" segment, leaving the full-size transit to focus on the large van or "two-ton" market.

Main rivals for the Transit Custom include the Volkswagen Transporter, Vauxhall Vivaro, Renault Trafic, and Mercedes-Benz Vito.
Described at launch by Ford of Europe CEO, Stephen Odell, as "A stylish and modern van that customers will be proud to have on the road, with the hardworking attitude they expect from a Transit," the Custom excels as a complete system.

Details about the Ford Transit Custom 2018 facelift
As a total package, the Transit Custom has always been hard to beat. But while the original 2012-2017 cabin design is fine, it was never particularly practical, with small, fiddly buttons and limited storage space. The 2018 facelift - or MCA (mid-cycle action) in Ford-speak - solved this issue with a complete interior redesign, which now offers class-leading cabin storage and updated infotainment options.

It also still avoids looking too much like a commercial vehicle, something Ford knows is important for Transit Custom buyers.

In addition, the 2018 update brings a new front-end design to the exterior that more closely matches Fords latest car design language. Key elements include the high-mounted grille with three bars and slim headlights, with LED daytime running lights on most models.

You may also have noticed that the lower central section of the front bumper is not painted now; it is also easily replaceable, a design detail intended to address occasional grounding damage that may occur on construction sites or when contacting high curbs.

Other changes include face-mounted rails for the side doors, which previously stood proud of the bodywork, and revised bodywork and stripes for the Transit Custom Sport models.

The rear of the van and the fundamental engineering continue forward, apart from a slight increase in structural rigidity, to improve refinement and the reintroduction of an eco-economic diesel variant.

Ford Transit Custom body variants and trim levels
In addition to the regular panel van, Custom is also available as a double cab (DCiV) and Kombi. There is also a passenger version of the Tourneo Custom.

DCiV features a second row of seats, meaning space for up to six people with a separate loading area, complemented by the full-height package, while Kombi has up to nine seats like a basic minibus.

All versions are available in two lengths (L1 and L2, also known as SWB and LWB for short and long wheelbase) and in two heights (H1 and H2).

The Ford Tourneo Custom Mk2 trim levels are:

Leader (also known as base)
Trend
Limited
Sport
Each version is relatively well equipped as standard, including remote locking, Bluetooth, double front passenger seat, eight-way adjustable drivers seat, and metal bulkhead (on the regular panel van and DCiV).
There are also plenty of cutting-edge options available, including Pre-Collision Assist technology and independent emergency braking (AEB) Active Braking (introduced in 2016).
Other high-tech safety aids were made available as part of the 2018 update, including intelligent speed assistance and blindspot monitoring with Cross Traffic Alert

The attractive Sport (above), featuring racing stripes, a body kit, lowered suspension, and large alloy wheels, was initially available only as a single model, but the choice was expanded to six versions in December 2016.

At the same time, a limited series of distinctive Transit Custom Color Edition was announced.

Ford Tourneo Custom engine choice and history
From launch in 2012 until the end of 2016, all Transit Customs were powered by a 2.2-liter TDCi turbodiesel engine, available in three power outputs: 100 HP / 310 Nm, 125 HP / 350 Nm, and 155 HP / 385 Nm.
This Euro 5 engine was officially replaced when Euro 6 emissions regulations were introduced in September 2016 - although you will likely find that Euro 5 registrations continued well into 2017 as dealers worked through their stock.
Newer Euro 6 Customs are powered by a branded 2.0-liter EcoBlue TDCi turbodiesel, known internally as the Panther engine.
Despite its smaller size, this new engine offers more power with less noise. It also came in three initial versions - 105 HP / 360 Nm, 130 HP / 385 Nm, and 170 HP / 405 Nm - but what is particularly impressive is the 20% increase in torque (pulling power) at lower revs, making it easier to move heavy loads. At the end of 2019, these engines were revised for further efficiency improvements, and a 185 HP / 415 Nm version was added to the top of the range.
A six-speed automatic gearbox was also introduced for the first time alongside the 2.0-liter EcoBlue engine.

How are the Ford Tourneo Custom engines?
The engines help. There was nothing particularly special about the performance of the old 2.2-liter units, so if youre considering one of those, dont worry. But the new 2.0-liter engines develop torque much earlier, so they feel more energetic and smoother, while also being quieter.
Most buyers go for the mid-power - so the 125 HP 2.2-liter or the 130 HP 2.0-liter - but if you can afford a punchier model with either 155 HP (2.2-liter), 170 HP, or 185 HP (2.0-liter)
The less powerful 100 HP and 105 HP models will handle the stated weights okay, but expect them to be slow and more fuel-thirsty when fully loaded.
In addition to adding the 185 HP engine, the end of 2019 also saw the introduction of mild hybrid technology (mHEV). This EcoBlue hybrid system is available as an option on certain models, to further improve fuel economy.
There is very little difference from the driving experience - to such an extent, youll be hard-pressed to know if the van youre in is equipped.

Is the Tourneo Custom automatic gearbox worth buying?
Fords manual gearbox fits standard in all transit customs and works very well for a van. Its not the most precise thing in the world, but neither is it so vague that you need a map to find the next gear.
In 2016, Ford added an optional six-speed automatic range to the lineup - attractive to both lifestyle buyers and operators who do a lot of miles, especially where they might get stuck in traffic. Again, this works well, but its not as sharp or positive as the DSG automatic that Volkswagen uses in the Transporter. The gear selector design means you often find youve accidentally locked it in manual mode instead of drive, which becomes quite annoying after a while.

Is the Ford Tourneo Custom quiet inside?
This is quite a quiet van, meaning you should arrive at the end of most journeys relatively fresh. The 2.0-liter models are generally more refined than the 2.2-liter models, although the revised 2.0-liter engines fitted from the end of 2019 seem to be a bit noisier again, probably due to the higher pressure injection system.
Regardless, road noise is also suppressed. Although you will find that there is more wind noise generated by the H2 high-roof models.

Important interior improvements for the 2018 Tourneo Custom facelift
The Tourneo Custom cabin has always looked smart, but it was never the most practical - or the easiest to use. For the 2018 facelift, Ford completely transformed this, enhancing the interiors functionality, which it claims is a "class-leading" amount of cabin storage.

Additional storage
While we applaud the additional storage, its a shame that the three new bins on the top of the dashboard dont have lids, meaning everything in them will be on display (and reflect in the windshield). They are also not so easy to access from the drivers seat.

The new interior door trim design is, however, a triumph. Now offering three levels of storage and a sensibly placed grab handle, we think most owners will appreciate this added utility, even if the lowest level is only accessible when the door is open.

Custom transit options and 2018 transit infotainment
Running Ford Sync 3, the new 8.0-inch tablet-style screen upgrade in Fiesta style is a vast improvement over the pathetically pokey offering available in the pre-facelift custom - although it may still not be as easy to use as the system mounted in the VW Transporter.
Sync 3 includes logical voice control - you can literally press a button and say "I need fuel" or even "I need coffee" and it will give you a list of the nearest options - and features both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

Cant stretch to the 8.0-inch screen? There is also a smaller 4.0-inch screen running what has been dubbed Sync Light; this does without touch control, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto, and cannot be paired with the built-in sat-nav system (which remains optional only on the full-fat Sync 3 system).

Given that, if the full Sync 3 setup isnt available to you, wed probably stick with the entry-level DIN-slot radio, paired with the new MyFord Dock accessory. This sits atop the dashboard and is designed to flexibly mount (and charge) all sorts of smartphones, tablets, and sat-navs securely. With so much business revolving around smartphones these days, we think this is an inspired innovation from Ford for the 2018 transit custom.
