Original parts Ford Tourneo Courier 2019-2023

Ford Tourneo Courier was the fourth and final model to join the Transit family when it was first launched in 2014. It is also the smallest, positioned below the Transit Connect, Transit Custom, and Transit, representing a more practical (and often cheaper) alternative to the Ford Fiesta Van.

In 2018, the Tourneo Courier underwent a major revision, bringing new looks and technology to Fords smallest van - full details about this are included below.

We do not expect major changes to the Courier in 2020, but with most of its rivals now discontinued, there are few alternatives if you are looking for a lot of space in a small package.

So, how practical is the Ford Tourneo Courier?
Not surprisingly, most customers of this van are single-person operators or small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). It targets buyers who need something more practical than a car-based van, but just barely.

While it takes up a little more space on the road, the Couriers loading area is twice the size and much more practical than the Fiesta Van, for example, offering more than double the loading volume.
It does not offer double the payload, however, while the Courier initially managed a payload of 660 kg in a loading space of 2.3 cubic meters, this dropped to 500-590 kg with the 2018 update (although the loading space increased to 2.4 cubic meters).
The current Fiesta Van has only 0.96 cubic meters of space in the back but can handle up to 530 kg in weight.

Variants and rivals
In addition to a regular van, the Transit Courier is also available as a five-seat Kombi model, with a second row of three seats that can fold and rotate in a 60:40 split.

Besides the Fiesta Van, the Tourneo Couriers rivals include the Fiat Fiorino and its close relations Peugeot Bipper and Citroen Nemo, although the latter pairing was discontinued in Europe in 2017.

The only other Europe-based van, the Opel Corsavan, was discontinued in 2018, and we understand it is unlikely to return soon.

Ford Tourneo Courier 2018 facelift
Ford gave the Tourneo Courier a significant update in 2018. This includes updated, more efficient engines and gearboxes, an updated media system, and visual changes to the front of the van.

A new driver assistance kit to enhance safety also became available at this time.
Inside, the center console was redesigned for easier use, with a new larger 6.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system available on higher-spec models, running the latest Ford Sync 3 software and positioned closer to the driver for improved visibility. The updated powertrains meet the latest Euro 6.2 emissions standards, with the option of a 1.5-liter diesel and revised 1.0-liter petrol engines. All versions gain six-speed manual transmissions instead of the previous five-speed unit, with improved shift quality, cruising refinement, and real fuel economy. Helping to further reduce fuel consumption in diesel models is a new efficiency package, including an active grille shutter, which shortens warm-up time and reduces aerodynamic drag.

Its engine range was updated in 2018 with a new, more powerful 100 HP 1.5-liter diesel EcoBlue, replacing the previous 1.6-liter unit.

What is it like to drive the petrol Transit Courier?
EcoBoost is a niche choice (aiming for about 5% of sales), which is a shame because it is the nicest engine to drive.
Although it has less torque than the diesels, it is more flexible and has less power delay from low revs. If you mainly drive in cities or make frequent stop-start trips, it is probably the best choice, although on longer journeys it will not match the fuel economy of the diesel models.

Diesel engines are best for most users
For higher mileage use, diesels make more sense, especially if you regularly drive long distances. The 1.5-liter 75 HP entry-level version is capable and popular if you are looking for a low-cost option. It is also the only engine available for buyers of the five-seat Kombi model.

Regarding the now-phased-out 1.6-liter diesel engine, we tested this model with ballast equivalent to half the Transit Couriers maximum payload. Certainly, the performance does not set the world on fire, but it is quiet, and Ford claims impressive fuel economy figures. This leaves the 100 HP 1.5-liter diesel as the best option for those buying new, after a lot of pulling power to handle heavy loads or who mostly make highway trips. Car-like driving experience
The Courier handles very well - fortunately, it shares the same excellent control weights, steering response, and quick gear changes as many Ford cars. Whether its a partially loaded van or an unloaded Kombi, when we tested it, we found that the Courier has superior ride quality, especially for such a small van with a short wheelbase.

Ford Tourneo Courier interior 2020
The 2018 updates improve on the already strong cabin
Simple but robust design, Plenty of car-like touches, The attractive, well-designed cabin is one of the Couriers strengths. Much of the dashboard and control panel is familiar to Ford car models, such as the B-Max and the equivalent Fiesta, and all feel high quality and durable.

The updated infotainment system added during 2018 only adds to this impression, being positioned high and offering clear displays on the screen.

Now, the steering wheel adjusts for reach and rake, making it easier than before for drivers of all sizes to get comfortably behind the wheel. And there is plenty of legroom, even for very tall drivers.

Ford Tourneo Courier service intervals and warranty
Service intervals are 15,000 kilometers, and the van has a three-year / 100,000 km warranty.
The Ford assistance package is standard, including "load continuation," whereby if a Courier breaks down on a delivery, its contents can be delivered free of charge while the van is repaired.

Ford Transit Courier mpg
In terms of fuel economy, the lowest running costs of the Ford Tourneo Courier Mk2 generation after 2018.
A special low-emission version of the same engine was also available, which, with a rating of 76.3mpg (and CO2 emissions of just 97g/km), made the Transit Courier the most economical van currently on sale.

The 1.5-liter diesel is quite good and manages 72mpg.

In this regard, the petrol EcoBoost lags far behind with 54mpg, but for trips around towns and cities, it might actually be a more economical proposition, as diesel engines typically do not like short trips. However, this will depend on your driving style. After the introduction of tougher WLTP fuel economy tests in mid-2018, the title of the most economical Tourneo Courier is now shared between the 75 HP and 100 HP 1.5-liter diesels. They promise around 67mpg - still extremely good for a modern van.

Ford Transit Courier safety and security
3.8 out of 5
3.8
Safety equipment rather than brilliant
There is no alarm fitted as standard on any model
Ford Transit Courier safety levels are reasonable, if not exceptional. The passenger version Tourneo Courier achieved a four-star Euro NCAP rating when tested in 2014, but the test has become considerably tougher since then.

Standard safety features of the Ford Tourneo Courier include:

Electronic Stability Control (ESC)
Hill-start assist
Rollover mitigation, which is triggered if sensors detect the van tipping over a dangerous point
Trailer Sway Control, which can brake individual wheels to keep trailers under control
Base Kombi models are also equipped with fewer than six airbags as standard, plus tire pressure monitoring (optional on the rest of the range), while Trend and Sport panel van models with Ford Sync include an emergency assistance feature.

In the event of an accident, this can make a direct call to local emergency service operators if the occupants mobile phone is connected to the Bluetooth system. It can provide the exact location of the van and uses the correct local language to give the information, based on GPS data. Very clever.

However, although you can specify blindspot monitors as an additional option, active safety aids such as autonomous emergency braking and lane-keeping assistance are not available at all.

In terms of security, the Tourneo Courier features standard remote locking and immobilization. However, you will need to pay extra for an alarm system.

Ford Tourneo Courier Sport 1.5 TDCI EcoBlue 100 HP.
Tested facelifted Sport model
A little more power from a newer engine
Still a small and stylish van
It may have only 100 HP, but this Sport model looks sharp enough to justify its higher price over lower-trend models.
The diesel engine is surprisingly quiet at idle and pulls reasonably promptly thanks to the 215 Nm of pulling power, with enough muscle to handle heavy loads.
While quiet at low engine speeds, the volume level increases as you pick up speed, although this is expected in a small diesel van. However, there is enough drop-off not to have to work the engine too hard to make progress.
Making the most of the engines power is a very straightforward gearbox and an easy-to-balance clutch, making you feel like you are driving a small car rather than a tiny van. With six gears, the engine is quite quiet at speed.
There is also not much wind noise on the highway, although many noises echo off the road surface. However, the fabric-covered package in our test model successfully prevented any noise from the load area from echoing into the cabin.
As for the suspension, it is quite firm, potentially exaggerated by the 16-inch alloys that come with the Sport finish, meaning less rubber and more metal between you and the road. The Courier is well set up, meaning it is mostly very comfortable, proving firm enough to feel in tune with heavy loads without bouncing around the road while remaining planted around corners. The brakes also feel strong and up to the task of handling heavy loads. Adding to this sense of security is a well-weighted steering that offers a good sense of control. While the seat provides adequate back support, it took us a lot of fiddling with the seat to find a comfortable position in this version.

What is special about the Tourneo Courier Sport?
The stripe, which has a choice of colors depending on the vans body color, makes an instant impression. Highlighting this look, the Sport is the only Courier that comes with fully colored bumpers and side moldings as standard.
You also get front and rear skid plates, a "Magneto Grey" finish for the door mirrors, and unique 16-inch alloy wheels, plus special Sport rocker panels. Its not a Tourneo Connect M-Sport, but its striking nonetheless.
