Original parts Ford Tourneo Courier 2014-2018

With Tourneo Courier, Ford has returned to the basics of utility vehicles for the smallest MPV.

Sometimes, something simpler is more sensible. Take the trend of the century to create small people carriers with a car-like design. All you really need as a starting point for such a vehicle is a small van. And if you agree and are looking for a very compact MPV, you might be interested in this, Ford Tourneo Courier.

In 2014, Ford launched the smallest utility vehicle, the Transit Courier. It was a design capable of providing a perfect base for creating a supermini-sized People Carrier, but this option was not initially taken up because the Ford brand already had one in its range, based on the Fiesta B-MAX. That car, launched in 2012 and remarkable for an intelligent design that completely dispenses with a central B-pillar, was ultimately a casualty of the markets fashion switch from MPVs to SUVs and was quietly phased out in 2018.

Instead of replacing it with something else designed from scratch, thoughts from Fords design department turned back to the Transit Courier and its suitability as a base for a small people carrier. This is why we received this car, the Tourneo Courier, launched in mid-2018, as part of a rejuvenated range of Ford Tourneo People Cars. Despite the LCV underpinnings, theres no lack of sophistication here. Especially under the hood where family buyers choose between the latest 1.5-liter EcoBlue diesel Ford or an enhanced 1.0-liter EcoBoost petrol engine with cylinder deactivation.

Driving Experience
Its always quite refreshing to drive a car whose sole purpose in life is to get you from A to B as affordably as possible. So there are no pretensions here - no dynamic expectations that could be disappointed. The underpinnings are derived from the old sixth-generation Fiesta, but the engines are borrowed from the current one, meaning Tourneo Courier buyers choose either a 1.5-liter EcoBlue diesel unit or a 1.0-liter EcoBoost three-cylinder powerhouse. Both engines are equipped with 100 hp and must be mated to a freshly designed 6-speed manual gearbox. The EcoBoost variant we tested will be the choice of most, who will approve of the fact that this units efficiency has been improved by the addition of cylinder deactivation.

The ride quality on broken surfaces is not as smooth as I would like, but things settle at highway speed. At that point, the noisy petrol engine sound diminishes a bit, although you still get quite a bit of wind and road noise from the boxy shape and high-profile tires. As you would expect from a car with such an expansive glass area, this MPV is simplicity itself to maneuver. The boxy shape allows you to easily see where the cars corners are, the wide door mirrors are a commercial carryover youll appreciate, and the expansive windshield gives you a much wider field of view than youd get in a supermini. In fact, a Tourneo Courier offers many more things than youd get in a supermini, but that wont stop it from being a relatively rare sight on our roads.

Design and Construction
This Tourneo Courier offers an honest van-derived design with a refreshingly sincere simplicity. The main visual change in recent years has been this revised grille. Otherwise, the main thing to note here is just how much cabin space Ford has managed to fit into a car with a supermini-sized road footprint.

And at the wheel? Well, this is Fords smallest MPV, but you wouldnt think that from a seat inside. The perception of airiness is helped by the large amount of space - and the complete superior vision, with an expansive windshield that stretches above your field of view. Everything is within reach, and now the central stack seems much more updated than at the first launch of the Courier, with the option of the brands latest "SYNC 3" infotainment technology. In the back, accessed through sliding doors, youd be tempted to say theres as much space as youd get in the more prized Tourneo Connect model. That airy roof height certainly makes it so. In the trunk, theres a capacity of 708 liters. And if you need more, the 60-40 split rear bench folds forward in two stages, up to 1,656 liters of space.

Market and Model
The purchase proposition here is quite simple: one body shape, a single "Zetec" level, and a single transmission choice, a 6-speed manual gearbox. However, it is tailored to a wide range of engines; either the 1.0-liter 100PS EcoBoost petrol unit we tried, which from launch was priced from just under 17,000 euros. Or a 1.5-liter 100PS EcoBlue diesel, which at the time of this models introduction was priced from just over 19,000 euros.

Lets give you some perspective on the Ford range. The next model in the brands Tourneo People Mover range is the medium-sized Tourneo Connect, which only comes with diesel power. With the same 1.5-liter 100PS EcoBlue unit, an equivalent five-seat version of the "Connect" would cost you almost 6,000 euros more than this Courier model - which frankly, we think many family buyers would struggle to justify. The same comments apply if you switch the comparison point to the Ford C-MAX MPV model. OK, so the C-MAX is, theoretically, a slightly larger class of People Carrier, but the reality is that it hardly offers you more luggage or people-carrying space than a Tourneo Courier. And it costs around 7,500 euros...

Cost of Ownership
One of the things that has completely changed with this design, from its initial launch as a utility vehicle, is the efficiency of running costs. This is due to the installation of a pair of fresh powertrains, which are now compliant with the latest Euro 6.2 emissions standard. And providing a 6-speed manual gearbox instead of the previous 5-speed. A bit annoyingly, you have to pay more to maximize the benefits of all the engineering efforts, as the brand has chosen to make its Auto Start-Stop engine system an extra-cost feature (its an additional 180 euros).
Anyway, lets move on to the figures, which for fuel economy have been measured according to the latest "WLTP" evaluation cycle ("Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure"). The emissions statistics we will cite here have been converted to the new "NEDC2" version of the new European driving cycle "NEDC2", as that still uses a lot of rival models. The 1.0 EcoBoost petrol unit we tried (the one most Tourneo Courier buyers will choose) manages up to 43.5mpg on the combined cycle and 122g/km CO2. Or 41.5mpg and 131g/km CO2 if you dont do Start-Stop. But the diesel? Well, for the 1.5 EcoBlue unit, youre looking at 52.3mpg on the combined cycle and 112g/km CO2.

Summary
Of course, there are things the Ford brand could improve here. The low-speed ride isnt as supple as wed like. And this square shape generates a lot of wind noise at speed. We would have liked to see more effort to differentiate the interior from the utility variant.

Ultimately, though, what matters here is space and sensibility, both of which are predictably strong selling points of the Tourneo Courier. If you dont need seven seats, wed even say it makes more sense than the brands larger Tourneo Connect model. And, obviously, it makes more sense than that conventional family hatchback you might have been looking at. But, of course, its not as sophisticated or as stylish. Does that really matter? If you dont think so and are one of the relatively few family buyers still looking for a compact MPV, then one of these should make your shortlist.
