This is the third generation Ford Ranger, a pickup designed to attract both commercial and private buyers, being both tough and attractive.

 
First introduced in 2011, the Ranger was updated with a new look inside and out in 2016, then received a new facelift in 2019, when new 2.0-liter EcoBlue engines were added, offering up to 213 HP

In 2016, the Ford Ranger received a facelift, a new interior, and an increase in standard specifications, although the drivetrain and chassis remained relatively unchanged.
The 2019 facelift for the Ford Ranger is a more comprehensive affair, at least from an engineering perspective.
Because, while the exterior changes are minimal and the interior modifications almost nonexistent, Ford added a full selection of engines to the 2019 Ranger, all based on a 2.0-liter EcoBlue already fitted in the large Transit van and Transit Custom van.
 
As a result, the maximum power network is 213 HP, during which the manual gearbox can be optionally replaced on some models with a new 10-speed automatic.

Clearly, the installation and cabin isolation is top-notch, but Ford has also implemented noise-canceling technology on higher-spec models to help filter out unpleasant sound frequencies.
 
But who cares how its done - the point is that the 2.0-liter Ranger, at least in its more lifestyle-oriented trim levels, is practically as quiet as a car. This alone transforms the driving experience, but there are other improvements, with high-spec models also gaining a range of driving modes, as well as revised suspension.

All Rangers come with a standard six-speed manual gearbox, which has a surprisingly short and precise action - for a pickup. This makes the more basic models, like the 2.0-liter Limited, remarkably pleasant to drive.

Instead, opt for a newer 2.0-liter EcoBlue vehicle, and youll now get an exceptional, fast, and smooth-shifting 10-speed automatic on the 170 HP and 213 HP versions.
 
The most challenging thing is that if you choose to use manual override, youll find that there are now so many gears to choose from, it can be quite overwhelming.
Fortunately, it works very well in full automatic mode, where the extra ratios boost acceleration and reduce engine noise at speed. Adding to the Rangers versatility, Ford also offers a range of final drive ratios, allowing you to tailor the vehicle towards performance, economy, or even towing.
The most basic regular cab models are available with a choice of two or four-wheel drive, all other Ranger models come with four-wheel drive as standard.
 
The four-wheel-drive system has a wide range of modes, which can be switched while driving at moderate speeds with just a twist of a dial. The Raptor has its own settings, but more on those below.
 
Ride and handling Ford Ranger
The Ranger has always driven well, with a relatively tight turning circle and good body control on twisty roads - meaning it doesnt roll much and changes direction smartly.
 
The trade-off for this before 2019 was always a slightly uncomfortable ride - especially at lower speeds, where the Ranger can feel very jiggly. This improves as you go faster, however, making this pickup just as happy on fast A and B roads as it is transporting goods to the site.
 
The 2.0-liter models available from mid-2019 are better in all areas. The lighter engine helps with direction changes, while the revised suspension takes out most of the low-speed irritability - although youll find the Wildtrak, which comes on large 18-inch wheels, remains noticeably firm.
 
So if comfort is essential to you, we recommend continuing the full suite of bells and whistles offered by the Wildtrak and instead selecting the Limited set. With smaller wheels and a slightly softer suspension setup, this is now a truly comfortable pickup, with almost car-like behavior on the road.
 
Sharp drops and bumps will still disturb the 2019 Rangers composure, but overall, this is now a very pleasant driving experience.
 
What is it like to drive the Ford Ranger Raptor?
The Ranger Raptor is a new high-performance model, which, like the large Ford F-150 Raptor sold in the USA, is heavily optimized for high-speed off-road driving.
 
It joins the Ranger lineup as part of the 2019 transformation, powered by a 2.0-liter twin-turbo EcoBlue diesel engine, combined with a 10-speed automatic gearbox.

Refinement
While on the road, wind and tire noise are reasonably limited, but you will experience quite a bit of vibration and noise from the 2.2-liter models, especially - at low speeds and especially when the engine is cold.
 
The new 2.0-liter engines dont seem to suffer from this problem at all. Even started from cold, they are quiet and car-like. So much so, that youre more likely to be disturbed by tire roar than engine noise.
 
Storage and visibility
There are a variety of storage pockets and cubbies, including a large 8.5-liter center console bin. But, like most pickups, the Rangers interior isnt as practical as that of a van.
 
Visibility, an important factor for larger vehicles, is good thanks to large door mirrors. But youll still need to be careful when parking.
 
Ford offers parking sensors and reversing cameras to help with this, and the latest models are available with automatic park assist, allowing them to identify suitable spaces and then park themselves.
 
Ford Ranger 2016 facelift modern upgrade
The 2016 update brought a new cabin design, with a simplified yet functional approach.
 
This included a new 8.0-inch screen and an upgraded Ford Sync infotainment system, standard on Limited and Wildtrak and an optional extra on XL and XLT.
