Original parts Ford Ranger 2012-2015
Bigger, safer, more capable, and much better to drive, the third-generation version of the Ford Ranger Mk3 pickup from 2012-2015 truly became significant in its appeal as a competitive proposition against tough segment rivals. In a used form, as when new, the idea is to entice everyone from builders to surf-boarding families, mountain bikers, with what is a very complete product.

History
Think of a pickup and Ford is a name you simply cannot ignore. Japanese manufacturers may have conquered the European market in modern times, but the Ford brand has a heritage in this segment that goes much further back, with pickup sales reaching their millions in the state. Even the companys first Model T from the early 1900s could be bought in the form of a small truck, with a closed cabin and a flat deck at the back. In those days, as well as in more recent times, vehicles like these could happily be as tough as they were tough. No more. Todays pickup must be almost all things to all people, an essential business tool by day and family transport by night. A cargo carrier and a leisure SUV all rolled into one, with car-like road manners and affordable running costs. Its something many modern competitors in this segment struggle with, but one Ford claimed to have come closer to meeting than ever before when they launched this third-generation Ranger model at the beginning of 2012, the companys most complete pickup.
It had to be. In the modern era, Ford has not found it easy to create a pickup tailored to the needs of European customers and has been trying since 1999 when we first saw the earliest version of this model. The 2006 MK2 variant was better, facelifted in 2009, but still couldnt properly compete with the tough Japanese triumvirate that governs this market segment on this side of the Atlantic, Mitsubishi L200, Toyota Hilux, and Nissans Navara. The three have always been good vehicles, but historically they have been very evidently commercial. At its 2012 launch, this MK3 Ranger model claimed to offer something more, if not quite a road car with a pickup deck, then the closest thing weve yet seen, with a design versatile enough to export to over 180 countries. Perfect, in principle, not only for core customers like farmers, plumbers, and builders who occupy jobs, but also for private individuals increasingly wanting a vehicle like this as a lifestyle accessory. It sold in this guise until Ford treated the model line to a major facelift in 2016.
What you get
The almost only global market where this MK3 Ranger wasnt sold was the USA. Apparently, its not big enough. It seems big enough for us, nearly five and a half meters long and with a sufficiently intimidating presence to scare off fast lane stragglers. But just as the drive is in this sense somewhat more sophisticated, so is the look. Australian designer Craig Metros kept it as square as any pickup should be, but sculpted the shape for a more modern and aerodynamic look. So, the front is diffused from the signature three-bar grille back to the wheel arches, with a windshield raked back and a body accent line flowing through the larger headlights to the hood for a tough yet more modern piece.
Like most pickup competitors, it comes with a selection of three body styles - a two-seater "Regular Cab," the so-called "Super Cab" with its occasional rear seats, and the four-door double cab which is the largest ends up buying. As for our comments, well start on the back bench, as its here that traditional pickup compromises tend to be made, with cramped legroom and, at worst, a ridiculously upright backrest, to give priority to load packages over people. Now dont get us wrong: were not suggesting that this MK3 Ranger has radically changed things in this regard - but, again, it has raised the bar in this segment.
By moving the central B-pillar forward, rear legroom and the best rear knee room have been achieved. And although this vehicle is actually narrower than a regular Ford Mondeo (and up to 100 mm narrower than some of its rivals), its possible to fit three adults on this seat without too much discomfort: two six-footers can certainly sit one behind the other with ease. Under the rear bench, you have hidden storage bins to keep tools and valuables out of sight. Or, if the rear seat isnt in use, you can fold the backrest for packages you might not want to send to the rear load.
And in front? Well, you climb high to reach the wheel of any pickup and this Ranger is no exception, with an airy, commanding cabin that offers full visibility and a front room for the front seat. Its here that the design offers the best car-like claims, creating quality from the apparently very good South African factory and there is technology and switchgear recognized from the most advanced members of the Ford car range. Gone is the horrible "umbrella-handle" handbrake mounted in line from the previous MK2 model, and the wheel adjusts for reach as well as rake. The instrument cluster with the central LED display was apparently inspired by the design of a G-Shock watch, functioning with precision protected by a robust casing. And additional models get a dash dominated by a color screen and five-inch technology that can run voice-activated control through the Bluetoothed mobile phone to satellite navigation systems and audio systems and even settings for dual-zone climate control.
True, not all plastics are high quality and soft to the touch, but the brand says, with some justification, that this is mostly because the materials need to be much more durable in a utility vehicle of this kind. One you have to be practical to live with - and it is, with more interior space for your bits and pieces than any other competitor thanks to no less than 23 different storage areas, everything from door pockets for 1.5-liter bottles to a glovebox large enough for a 16-inch laptop computer. Theres also an 8.5-liter deep central console bin that can opt to cool up to six drink cans and large enough to close the smelliest Indian outfit under a molded upper tray to store a mobile phone and coins.
What to look for
The Ranger is built extremely tough and a beneficiary of several years of continuous improvement. The interior is not the last word in refinement, but its tough. Typically, check for damage to exhausts and suspensions from off-road use, check that the load bed stays arent bent or can break, and ensure theres life in the clutch, diff, and shock absorbers. It might have been used for some very heavy towing.
Our ownership study revealed a few issues. Some owners reported problems with the gearbox - either transmission noise or difficulties in selecting gears (especially third), so check the test drive. One owner had a complete engine failure (down to a defective piston) and various top-end failures were reported, such as the tow bar, rear bumpers, trailer wiring, and water leaks. Some owners also noted that the paintwork wears.

Approximate prices based on a 2014 Ranger 2.2 TDCi 150 HP. It can be applied to a majority Ford model, spare parts, and a reasonable price. An air filter will cost around 17 euros - or up to 30 euros for a premium brand. Youll pay around 220 euros for the oil pump, between 5 and 15 euros for an oil filter, between 10 and 25 euros for a thermostat, and between 16 and 35 euros for wiper blades. A water pump is around 90 euros - or up to nearly 135 euros for a premium brand. Brake sets are around 25 euros - or up to nearly 75 euros for a premium brand. Brake discs are around 30 euros - or between 95 and 125 euros for a premium brand.
On the road
There arent many pickups developed primarily to prioritize driving dynamics, but this is one of them. The rear leaf suspension that all vehicles of this kind must currently have for the very high payloads many of their owners will need will never produce a particularly car-like driving experience, whatever the glossy brochures might say. But Ford engineers have strived to replicate, as much as they could, prototype testing over more than a million kilometers to deliver a vehicle that remains tough enough for the harsh conditions of the Australian Outback and can be driven for hours in the endless Argentine Pampas, but one that in this third-generation is also at home on high-speed German autobahns - or just collecting dry cleaning.
Did they manage to meet this challenging brief? Indeed, it depends on your expectations. Does it ride and handle like a Discovery? Well, of course not. A Discovery isnt built to take on a 1.3-ton payload. But does it set high standards for models of this era in the pickup segment? Very categorically yes, this Ford being agile, stable, precise, and comfortable. The first thing youll probably notice is the steering: well, you wont notice it at all if youve come from a modern large family SUV, as it feels little different, but if youre a long-time pickup driver used to the vague recirculating ball steering that vehicles of this kind practically all had before the launch of this model in 2012, then the rack-and-pinion steering of this Ranger will be a revelation. This will make you more confident wherever the road takes you, especially if youre threading through city traffic, a place where the relatively tight turning circle - 11.8m on two-wheel-drive models and 12.4m on 4x4 variants - will be useful.
Another step forward was made in terms of refinement, this model being 22% quieter than its predecessor, thanks to a stiffer structure and a dual-seal system for the doors. Its another area where this Ford has gained a clear lead in the market and will make you much more willing to want to take it on longer distances and much less likely to leave it at home when the workday ends if you also have a conventional car sitting in the driveway. But if thats the case, youll still have to make some allowances when it comes to ride and handling. You still feel road imperfections that a regular family hatch might easily iron out and, of course, especially if you dont have a heavy load in the back, this two-ton high-set vehicle offers much more body roll than the SUV set will be used to. Again, though, for a pickup, this MK3 Ranger has raised the standard.
Under the hood, most models were sold with the 2.2-liter four-cylinder TDCi turbo diesel engine that Ford borrowed from the Mondeo and its Galaxy and S-MAX MPVs, available here with 125 or 150 HP. Its a torquey unit, with 330 or 375 NM of power offered, enough in the 4WD version to tow a braked trailer of up to 3350kgs, a class-leading figure. However, for truly effortless towing, youll need the Rangers engine, a 3.2-liter five-cylinder TDCi diesel with 200PS on tap and 470 NM of torque, most of which you can access from as low as 1,750 rpm. Enough in Australian tests to easily pull a 160-ton steam locomotive out of a shed. Whatever you choose to tow, youll be able to do so safely, thanks to an intelligent Trailer Sway Control system that automatically detects when a trailer starts to snake and discreetly brings things back under control.
The transmission choice with both more powerful models lies between a surprisingly slick 6-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed automatic that many original buyers chose, smart enough to adapt its shift patterns to the terrain and your driving style. And, of course, if youre a typical Ranger owner, youll want to put its all-terrain capability to the test on a fairly regular basis. Thats why, although there were entry-level two-wheel-drive models for those who needed that, most of the range was built around 4WD variants. As usual with vehicles of this type, this Ranger runs in 2WD unless you turn the drive controller to its "4H" "4x4 High" setting, something that can be done on the move. That will be fine for paved and grassy fields, but for anything more serious than that, youll want to go further into the "4L" "4x4 Low range" mode, which will give you a serious set of go-anywhere road ratios.
Thus equipped, you can really start to make the most of what is a very confident mud-plugger indeed thanks to the way key components like the fuel tank have been moved out of harms way, facilitating a decent ground clearance of 229mm. Axle articulation is excellent, side slopes of up to 25 degrees can be traversed, and water waded to a depth of up to 600mm. Plus, theres a TCS traction control system smart enough to reduce engine torque to the exact amount that can be delivered to the ground through the wheels, prioritizing the wheels with the most traction and automatically braking any that start to spin.
Overall
You cant deny that this MK3 Ranger is a thoroughly thought-out product. Its safe, spacious, smart, capable of carrying large loads, and finally has engines that can match or beat the competition. Whether its needed for active family weekends or simply to transport work colleagues with their kit and tools, this robust automotive Swiss army knife seems to cover almost everything.
No, the major improvement came in terms of driving dynamics. Perhaps these arent as car-like as the blue oval would like, but they proved to be a big step forward for a vehicle of this kind, helped by technology that saw Japanese competitors having to play catch-up. When it all comes down to it, the right tool can make childs play of mens work. And if youre looking for the best all-round contender in the pickup sector from the 2012-2015 period, then this Ranger Mk3 might just prove to be the right tool for you. Job done.
