Original parts Ford Puma 2020-2023
Inclined like a car that can turn heads on a Friday, the 2020 Ford Puma matches flat-pack furniture with ease on a Saturday afternoon, while always offering a driving level at a driving level, the Ford Puma SUV makes some bold promises about a wide range of talents.
This new compact crossover is a rival to the Nissan Juke and Renault Captur, driven by style and revives a badge last seen on the small Ford coupe first sold in the 90s. This is certainly not a coupe, but it is certainly a more elegant shape than the boxy EcoSport, which has been the entry point into the crossover / SUV range in recent years.
Like the original Puma, however, this SUV is based on the Ford Fiesta. This time, it is a considerably larger vehicle: longer, wider, and taller, with a substantially larger trunk. The parts on the Ford Puma are mostly those after Focus 4 and Fiesta 7 or Ecosport.
Puma launches many new Ford technologies
Besides the attractive (and divisive) looks, the Puma is also the testing bed for a whole range of new engineering and gadgets, which Ford hopes will help sell their cars.
Chief among these is the addition of mild hybridization to its petrol engines - essentially a battery that is recharged while you decelerate or brake, which can power an electric motor to supplement the normal engine.
This benefits both efficiency and performance, making the 1.0-liter EcoBoost petrol engine in the Puma launch with a greater and more thrilling feel than it should, while fuel economy returns, making a diesel engine seem somewhat unnecessary.
Fiesta-type interior, with extras
The basic layout of the Pumas interior is straight from the Fiesta, with the 8.0-inch Sync 3 infotainment screen and various practical cubby holes to store things.
Where the Puma changes things is at the wheel, where a 12.3-inch screen (standard on some models, optional on others) replaces the analog dials, and in the dashboard panels that surround the air vents that stretch across the line.
These vary depending on the finish, either with carbon fiber or wood effect, depending on the choice of a model that is based on a more performance or luxury look.
High-spec trim structure
The model line starts with the sporty ST-Line and the elegant Titanium and has been complemented since launch by the ST-Line X.
Arriving mid-2020, the ST-Line X Vignale promises interior luxury with a more performance-oriented exterior - thanks to a large rear spoiler, LED headlights, leather seats and steering wheel, plus B&O stereo.
All models come with large alloy wheels and smart luggage space, thanks to a flexible and variable trunk floor and the "Megabox" storage system - essentially a large plastic container under the trunk, with waterproof lining and a plug
2020 Ford Puma loading space
Despite the compact external proportions, the Puma promises to be a practical SUV: the loading space is better than the closest competition at 456 liters, which is 164 liters more than the Fiesta it is based on. There are extra centimeters in the outer body to accommodate this space - surely, the Puma is longer, wider, and taller than the smaller hatchback, so its worth measuring your garage or parking space to ensure it will fit. However, quite a bit of this additional utility comes from the 80-liter compartment under the trunk floor (which Ford calls the Megabox), a storage space lined with waterproof and resistant plastic and a drain plug at the bottom.
Apart from a useful place to store things you dont want rolling around in the trunk, it is also perfect for muddy or dirty shoes or sports kit (as you can drain any dirt and then let the water drain) and also means the Puma can carry items over a meter long in an upright position. Like a set of golf clubs.
Even without the Megabox, the Puma trunk is a practical space, with an uninterrupted width of a meter and a movable floor that offers either maximum space or a large loading space with the seats folded. This is positioned with narrow, hinged shelves that fold out when not in use.
The parcel shelf is flexible and is attached to the tailgate, so it is not in the way and does not require hinges in the loading space that could be stored. You can also carry up to 565 kg in the trunk, handy for heavy trips to the garden center or DIY store.
The safety level of the new 2020 Ford Puma
The Ford Puma received a full five stars when tested by Euro NCAP, like the Fiesta it is loosely based on. This car is also available with more autonomous technology, so you should be in safe hands.
Like modern cars, the Puma has a dozen sensors, three radars, and two cameras to help the driver maneuver the car safely at low speed and also on the highway.
The most important innovation included with this car is the new local hazard information system - an onboard modem that communicates a warning with other similarly equipped cars when there has been an accident or another hazard on the road - broken down vehicles, objects in the roadway, and even dangerous driving conditions such as fog or ice.
Interior
New for this segment and for Ford in general are wireless charging, massage seats, and 12.3-inch digital dials, all giving the Puma a more advanced and luxurious technological feel than the Fiesta.
2020 Ford Puma Titanium interior
Inside, there is a design similar to the Fiesta and its 8.0-inch Sync 3 infotainment system - it is a cleaner, less cluttered look than previous generation Fords.
In this car, you will get a selection of higher-end looks, with fabrics on the door cards and a range of carbon and wood effect air vents and infotainment surrounds depending on the model.

2020 Ford Puma digital gifts
The latter has a choice of clear and sharp graphics, depending on the driving mode you are in, which are neither too abstract in design nor an unnecessary digital rendering of a set of analog dials. Just a nice balance between the two with plenty of information available at a glance. An optional panoramic glass sunroof that runs the length of the car (though interrupted in the middle) brings a lot of light into the cabin, but will pose problems for taller drivers as it brings the ceiling height down to a hair-ruffling altitude.
The main infotainment screen is as bright and easy to read as in the Fiesta, which means it is excellent, and if you dont access the interface, there is the inclusion of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto at no extra cost.
Choose the Puma ST-Line and you will get a flat-bottomed steering wheel with red stitching, plus alloy pedals, an aluminum gear shifter, and a black headliner for maximum sporty appeal.
Optionally available is also a B&O sound system with plenty of power in its range of 10 speakers and a commendable amount of bass thanks to a well-hidden subwoofer in the trunk
Petrol engines
The options here are based on a three-cylinder engine with two power outputs. Ford says in any case, this engine offers better economy, alongside additional performance - giving it the feel of a much larger 1.5-liter unit.
Both things are down to the fact that it has been enhanced with 48v mild hybrid technology - a complicated way of saying that the Puma has a battery that charges when the car slows down or brakes, which can then be used to power an electric motor to supplement the petrol engine.
This process is quite seamless and requires no input from the driver, although you might feel a stronger than normal engine braking sensation when you take your foot off the gas; slowing the car down faster than you would if you were coasting. You will also often notice that the engine disengages similar to a normal start/stop system, but in the Puma, this can occur when the clutch is pressed and the car is still moving.
The base engine has 125 HP and feels more than adequate for city driving, with a decent amount of poke when pulling onto faster roads like highways and motorways.
Needless to say, the 155 HP version offers more confident acceleration, especially for low-end torque reduction, meaning you dont have to keep changing gear to make progress.
Not that gear changing is particularly taxing thanks to the positive and mechanical feel of the six-speed manual gearbox (a seven-speed automatic will follow), which is actually a fun part of the driving process.
Ford Fiesta is the best small car to drive, so the larger Puma certainly has a strong base to build on. This car is only 60 kg heavier than the hatchback, but it has to cope with a higher center of gravity, which can have a negative effect on how a car handles.
Changes have been made to the Fiestas mounts to compensate, of course - stiffer rear suspension, plus larger dampers and a wider footprint, thanks to an extended track width (effectively the length of the axle), which adds stability in corners.
It has worked, fortunately, and the Puma debuts as the best small SUV if you like to drive due to its ability to corner without the body rolling too much and in the ST-Line X model.
The fun-to-drive features are further enhanced with Fords selectable Mode technology, which allows drivers to adjust throttle response, ESC, traction control, plus shift timing for automatic models, to match responses and performance to your given driving style. The modes are called Normal, Eco, Sport, Slippery, and Trail.
Sport optimizes the engine for more refined performance and also adds weight to the steering, making it feel more positive and confidence-inspiring. In any case, it is a very quick rack, meaning small movements on the wheel lead to large direction changes at the front end.
Elsewhere, the ST-Line X has sportier suspension, which has considerably increased the fun levels.
