Original parts Ford Mondeo 2019-2023
The popularity of the Ford Mondeo was once legendary - who could forget the Labour Partys commitment to appeal to the "Mondeo Man" in the 90s? The meteoric rise in SUV popularity, however, has left traditional family cars like the Mondeo struggling in sales charts, as they strive to offer the same kind of versatility or desirable image as these models.
Indeed, Mondeo sales are surpassed by its internal rival, the Kuga. More conventional competitors come in the form of the Skoda Superb or Vauxhall Insignia - large, saloon-style cars aimed at chewing up mega miles in comfort and refinement, capable of effortlessly transitioning from motorway cruiser to family bus, depending on the weekday or weekend.
Huge boots, practical body
The Mondeos fastback design gives it a cavernous rear loading area, accessed by a wide-opening hatchback to make this large family car extremely practical. Despite its sloping roofline, there is genuine space for five adults here and, thanks to a comfortable ride and excellent refinement, they will be comfortable even on the longest journeys. Fold the rear seats down, and the vast 550-litre boot expands in size to 1,466 litres - enough to give many a practical SUV a run for their money.
Comfort was a priority. Previous Mondeos were praised for their fantastic handling on the road, being genuinely fun to drive, but a shift in production has moved the current model more towards handling. This is largely due to the US market - whereas previously, the Mondeo was a distinct model for Europe, it is now available in the states, albeit badged as the Fusion.
EcoBoost Petrol and EcoBlue Diesel
Most Mondeo buyers opt for a five-door hatchback or estate with a choice of petrol and diesel engines, however, there is also a four-door saloon available exclusively with a hybrid engine. This hybrid is now also available in estate form, using a 2.0-litre petrol engine and an electric motor for a combined power output of 187 hp. Available to Mondeo buyers is a single EcoBoost petrol engine of 1.5 litres, with a sleek and economical diesel.
This was introduced in early 2019, with 2.0-litre EcoBlue diesels inserted at outputs of 150 hp and 190 hp. Both are available with a range of manual or automatic gearboxes, as well as all-wheel drive at additional cost. Most Mondeos are equipped with a six-speed manual gearbox, while Powershift automatics are available on some higher-powered engines, while all-wheel drive is also available on certain engines.
Available Vignale model
Not only does the Mondeo have crossovers and SUVs to fight against in sales stakes, high-value finance offers on premium-badged models eat further into its sales. After all, if a BMW 3 Series or Audi A4 was available for a similar monthly payment, Fords workhorse becomes quite unattractive.
In response to this, Ford introduced a new range-topping line in 2015 - Vignale. This blurs the lines between a true luxury sub-brand - like Lexus - and a trim level. Ford created Vignale in response to an increasing number of buyers opting for the highest Titanium X trim level, and it brings perks such as access to a concierge service, dealer lounges, and free car washes, as well as a host of standard equipment.
While the loading space is marginally reduced compared to rivals like the Skoda Superb, what will be appreciated is the Mondeos genuine ability to seat five adults in comfort. If youre over six feet tall, you might find the sloping rear roofline affects headroom, which isnt an issue in the estate. Legroom and shoulder width also impress.
The front seats, particularly the more enveloping sports variety fitted to ST-Line and Titanium Edition models, offer excellent support in all aspects, meaning youre unlikely to feel fatigued after a long drive.
Storage compartments are dotted around the cabin, all being useful in size and shape, particularly the glovebox with an integral shelf. The open shelf area at the bottom of the center console is ideal for placing a phone, close to a 12V socket, but its far from secure. Pairing it via Bluetooth is straightforward, and the connection also seems reliable. Sony was particularly confident that sound quality through a Bluetooth audio stream was not inferior to wired connections.
Theres no hiding the fact that the Mondeo is a large car and can feel it on the road, especially if youre maneuvering it into a tight space. However, its not as daunting as it could be and is surprisingly maneuverable, you just need to ensure you buy a version with full parking sensors and consider the optional reversing camera to enhance rear visibility.
The main issue is the cars length, as it can overhang the end of a city parking space. Otherwise, theres little to find intimidating about the size of the Mondeo V. Being a large car with hatchback versatility, theres no doubt that the Ford Mondeo 5 facelift practices will be positively received by customers.
All Mondeo hatchbacks come with a 60:40 split rear seat, which doesnt quite fold flat but is useful enough for most loads it will carry. All models also come with a load-through hatch behind the central armrest. As standard, the Mondeo Mk5 is delivered with a space-saving spare wheel, meaning a 541-litre boot with all seats in use.
Euro NCAP tested the Mondeo 5 estate, but its score also applies to the five-door hatchback, achieving five stars. The cars basic structure is both lighter and stronger than before, meaning it will fundamentally protect occupants better should an unfortunate accident occur.
Comprehensive airbags also contribute to safety while LED lights and a pedestrian detection system, which aims to reduce, if not eliminate, collisions with individuals, improve safety for those outside the Mondeo. Its the fact that you have to pay extra for so much equipment that could help save lives when Ford could have led and standardized much of the kit that disappoints us. Optional safety equipment includes those rear inflatable seatbelts - a first for Ford in the European market, the adaptive cruise control system, and the blindspot warning system. Higher versions come with a lane departure warning system, while top cars feature dynamic LED headlights as standard, bending the light beam into corners as you go. LED daytime running lights are also part of this package.
Interior of a Mondeo 5 Facelift 2020
Rather like the pleasant but evolutionary theme of the exterior, the interior of the Ford Mondeo breaks little new stylistic ground. Many panels are formed from soft-touch mouldings, which reinforce the premium feel, further contributing to sound deadening and scratch reduction. However, it feels undeniably a little dated here, and rivals like the Skoda Superb offer slicker, yet still premium-feeling cabins.
Opting for a top Vignale model brings additional materials, including a leather-covered dashboard and quilted seats, but these arent really necessary - the Mondeo five is a comfortable car, regardless of trim level.
The center console has a variety of circular switch buttons, which all look identical but are clearly labeled and easy to understand once youve spent a bit of time behind the wheel. The remaining physical controls work well too, precisely.
Dominating the center console is the 8.0-inch touchscreen for the Sync3 infotainment system, which is blessed with clear graphics, unambiguous text, and colorful themes for each of its functions. Higher models also have a combined analog and digital instrument cluster, displaying various details such as trip information, satellite navigation instructions, and traffic signs in a dynamic manner.
Forward visibility is good, allowing you to position the car well on the road, but a lack of standard parking sensors, not to mention a reversing camera - its difficult to judge the cars extremities - can make parking confidently challenging, especially as the rear slopes quite dramatically. We recommend specifying at least the optional sensors.
Mounting the mirrors on the door pillars themselves provides a greater view of rear traffic conditions, although taller drivers may find the meeting point of the pillar with the thick windscreen and the front corner of the roof creates a blind spot when crossing oncoming traffic.
Comfort
With room to luxuriate, high-quality materials, and a well-controlled ride quality, the Mondeos comfort levels are a particular area of strength.
This additional refinement improvement makes the car feel more isolated from the outside world, which, paradoxically, is why it feels a little less satisfying to drive. That being said, with minimal body roll and fine body control, the Mondeo remains composed and doesnt float over long undulations on road surfaces. Vignale models offer greater refinement, with additional soundproofing making them almost silent at a motorway cruise. Comfort remains strong at urban and highway speeds, and while the standard suspension settings fitted in the UK cope admirably with bumps and ruts, you feel the initial intrusion, though softened. Its not severe enough to trouble passengers but gives a sporty feel to a car that otherwise doesnt feel inclined.
The Mondeos ergonomics are sound, with pedals and gear lever falling easily to hand and with well-weighted actions. Theres also plenty of adjustment in the seats and steering column, while the light steering feel further aids comfort.
The dual-zone climate control system efficiently cools or heats the vast cabin as desired remarkably quickly, the sense of space amplified by the optional fixed glass roof. Soft-touch plastics and high-quality materials elsewhere convey an aura of plushness, normally associated with more premium cars.
Wind noise is kept low, although there is some low-level turbulence around the door mirrors which now protrude from the door skins rather than the window frame. Some tire noise also infiltrates the cabin when driving on coarser road surfaces, which is more noticeable on cars equipped with larger alloy wheels
Two diesels to choose from
Given that diesel engines are expected to power 90% of Mondeo hatchbacks, offering a range of power outputs is a 2.0-litre unit, starting with 150 hp and 350 Nm of torque, in front-wheel-drive six-speed manual form. The 0-100 km/h sprint is completed in 9.7 seconds, or 10.3 automatic
A single EcoBoost petrol
Petrol power accounts for a much smaller portion of Mondeo sales. The 1.5-litre EcoBoost with 165 hp and 242 Nm for a 0-100 km/h time of 9.2 seconds and a top speed of 138 mph. On the road, this engine doesnt feel as flexible as this torque figure suggests, requiring frequent stirring of the six-speed manual gearbox from one ratio to another, but again, its low note doesnt intrude too much into the Mondeos cabin.
This engine can also be equipped with an optional six-speed automatic 9.1 seconds from sprinting to 100 km/h from a standstill, while the top speed drops to 214 km/h.
