Original parts Ford Mondeo 2014-2018
With an elegant silhouette, this is the new Ford Mondeo Mk5, a body style abandoned in the middle of the previous generations life cycle due to declining sales.
Unless large family cars have a premium badge, it seems that sedans lack the appeal to European buyers. Opel sells a few four-door Insignias and Volkswagen Passat sedans.
Therefore, for the return of the Mondeo sedan, Ford has chosen a completely different approach, trying to offer its niche by providing a more specific appeal: at the launch at the end of 2014, it is available only as a gasoline-electric hybrid. This is the first hybrid Ford model sold in Europe, although the Mondeo has been sold with this electric train in America for two years, where hybrids are more popular than diesel.
Subsequently, since the USA and Canada only receive the sedan, the hybrid is not designed for the more popular hatchback and estate forms.
Although the crash test experts at Euro NCAP have yet to publish their findings on the safety of the Ford Mondeo sedan, the company expects a five-star car to do so.
Under the Mondeos body is a lighter but stronger crash structure that should better protect the cars occupants in the event of an accident. The airbags will still cushion them, while the LED rear lights and a pedestrian detection system with automatic braking improve safety for pedestrians and other road users.
We did not give the car a five-star rating, primarily because much of the safety equipment is optional, Ford did not have the opportunity to set new standards for class safety.
On the options list for Mondeo sedans are those inflatable rear airbags, adaptive cruise control, blind spot warning system, and even city emergency braking. Lane departure warning is standard, while the X package comes with standard dynamic LED headlights that illuminate the light beam towards corners. LED daytime running lights are also part of this package.
Although it is a large car, there is no doubt that the practicality of the Ford Mondeo Mk5 sedan is limited by a combination of its four-door shape and the hybrid battery pack under the trunk floor.
Due to the battery installation, the rear seat does not fold, limiting the sedans total carrying capacity to 525 liters. The non-hybrid Vauxhall Insignia (500 liters) can only match, but the VW Passat (586 liters) can beat it, while the smaller Toyota Prius hybrid (445 liters) is significantly smaller but benefits from a hatchback.
This battery pack under the boot also excludes the fitting of a spare tire - all other Mondeos come standard with a space saver, the hybrid sedan is equipped with a repair and puncture kit.
Despite the boot disappointment, many speak of the spacious interior of the Mondeo sedan, offering ample leg and shoulder room for five adults. While this tapered profile, top cups might dress Mondeos style in a certain degree of elegance, there is no new space to photograph for a headroom camera in the rear seats, especially for the discomfort of taller passengers.
Those in the front get an even better deal, with enveloping and supportive sports seats, offering a wide range of adjustments to ensure optimal comfort. Like the pleasant evolution of the exterior, the interior of the latest Ford Mondeo sedan will not surprise many customers. Many of the molds are made from soft-touch plastics, which means there is a superior idea about the cabin, as well as their side effect, minimizing scratches and suppressing outside noise.
The new circular control is placed on the newly designed center console, which at first glance seems confusing, but is logical to use. Other working devices operate efficiently with a level of quality that reinforces the premium atmosphere of the Mondeo.
The popularity of the Ford Mondeo was once legendary - who could forget the Labour Partys commitment to appeal to "Mondeo Man" in the 90s? The meteoric rise in SUV popularity, however, has left traditional family cars like the Mondeo to plummet in sales charts, while they struggle to offer the same kind of versatility or desired image as these models.
Indeed, Mondeos sales are surpassed by its internal rival, Kuga. More conventional competitors present themselves in the form of the Skoda Superb or Vauxhall Insignia - large, sedan-style cars aimed at chewing up mega miles in comfort and refinement, capable of effortlessly transitioning from highway to family bus, depending on weekdays and weekends.
Huge boots, practical body
Mondeo gives it a cavernous rear loading area, accessed by a wide-opening hatchback to make this large family car extremely practical. Despite its sloping roofline, there is genuine space for five adults.
While the loading space is marginally reduced compared to rivals like the Skoda Superb, what will be appreciated is Mondeos genuine ability to seat five adults in comfort. If you are over six feet tall, you might move to the sloping rear roofline, which affects headroom, not a problem over the property. Legroom and shoulder width also impress.
The front seats, especially the more enveloping sport variety, tailored to ST-Line and Titanium Edition models, offer fine support in all aspects, meaning you are unlikely to feel tired after a long drive.
Storage compartments are dotted around the cabin, all being useful in size and shape, especially the glove box with an integral shelf. The open shelf area at the bottom of the center console is ideal for placing a phone, close to a 12V socket, but is far from your safety. Pairing it via Bluetooth is simple, and the connection also seems reliable. Sony was particularly confident that the sound quality through a Bluetooth audio stream was not inferior to wired connections.
Rather like the pleasant but evolutionary theme of the exterior, the interior of the Ford Mondeo breaks little new stylistic ground. Many panels are formed from soft-touch molds, which reinforce the premium feel, further contributing to sound deadening and scratch reduction. However, it feels undeniably a bit dated here, and rivals like the Skoda Superb offer slicker, yet premium-feeling cabins.
Opting for a top Vignale model brings additional materials, including a leather-covered dashboard and quilted seats, but these are not really necessary - the Mondeo is a comfortable car, regardless of trim level.
The center console has a variety of circular switch buttons, which all look identical but are clearly labeled and easy to understand once youve spent a bit of time behind the wheel. The remaining physical controls also work well, precise in their actions and robust without feeling too laborious.
Dominating the center console is the 8.0-inch touchscreen for the Sync3 infotainment system, which is blessed with clear graphics, unambiguous text, and colorful themes for each of its functions. Higher models also have a combined analog and digital instrument cluster, displaying various details such as trip information, satellite navigation instructions, and traffic signs in a dynamic manner.
Forward visibility is good, allowing you to position the car well on the road, but a lack of standard parking sensors, not to mention a reversing camera - its difficult to judge the cars extremities - can make parking with confidence difficult, especially as the rear slopes quite dramatically. We recommend specifying at least the optional sensors.
Mounting the mirrors on the door pillars themselves offers a greater view of rear traffic conditions, although taller drivers may find the meeting point of the pillar with the thick windshield and the front corner of the roof creates a blind spot when crossing oncoming traffic.
The economic hero of the Mondeo range is, surprisingly, the 2.0-liter diesel with 150 HP, returning a claimed 40.4-61.4mpg in manual/front-wheel drive configuration.
Hybrid power comes in Saloon and Estate only, so it is reduced here, meaning a maximum of 27.4-41.5mpg if you dont want a diesel and instead choose the 1.5-liter gasoline with 165 HP, and the same manual/front configuration. The automatic gearbox engine is the worst performer with a promised 22.8-38.2mpg.
Diesel engines
At launch, an economical 1.6-liter TDCi Econetic was available, producing 115 HP and a useful 270 Nm of torque.
Surprisingly, with a top speed of 191 km/h and completing the 0-100 km/h sprint in a leisurely 12.1 seconds, it was the slowest Mondeo hatchback available, but mated to a six-speed manual gearbox, it was also the most economical, recording a claimed average of 78.5 mpg with CO2 emissions of just 94g/km.
Since then, this engine has been replaced by a 1.5-liter TDCi, which provides similar performance figures.
At the top of the diesel range is a TWC-turbo 2.0 TDCi producing 210 HP and 450 Nm of torque, available with front-wheel drive and Powershift automatic gearbox, offering a 7.9-second time between 0-100 km/h. The top speed is 234 km/h.
Mondeo can struggle to put all this power and torque on the road through the automatic gearbox, but once at speed, the shovel reserve makes it an extremely efficient highway cruiser, which remains permanently drained. It gathers pace in a non-dramatic manner but surprises with its quick responses if you knock the gearbox into S mode.
Given that diesel engines should power 90% of Mondeo hatchbacks, it is a strong choice and Ford has delivered. Offering a range of power outputs is a 2.0-liter unit, starting with 150 HP and 350 Nm of torque, in front-wheel drive six-speed manual form. The 0-100 kp/h sprint is completed in 9.7 seconds, or 10.3 with the automatic PowerShift gearbox.
Gasoline engines
Gasoline power represents a much smaller portion of Mondeo sales, so unsurprisingly, there is only one option here.
The 1.5-liter EcoBoost with 165 HP and 242 Nm for a 0-100 km/h time of 9.2 seconds and a top speed of 205 km/h. On the road, this engine doesnt feel as flexible as that torque figure suggests, requiring frequent stirring of the six-speed manual gearbox from one ratio to another, but again, its low note doesnt intrude too much into the Mondeo cabin. A 1.0-liter three-cylinder EcoBoost gasoline, taken from the Fiesta and Focus, in 125 HP form, offered 170Nm of torque and a 0-100 km/h time of 12 seconds. You needed to work this engine hard to move the large Mondeo. If straight-line speed concerns you, the 2.2-liter EcoBoost, available only in higher-spec boxes and exclusively with the six-speed automatic gearbox, could reach 100 km/h from nothing in 7.9 seconds. This is fast for a family car, aided by the 345 Nm of torque from 2,300 rpm.
It comes with a generous list of standard equipment to keep you safe and entertained, while the wide selection of engines means there is something to suit almost all tastes. The biggest problem it has is the wealth of SUVs stealing sales from this more traditional body style, but Mondeo should not be overlooked.
Choosing the right one shouldnt be too difficult a task, many of the most bets. If you simply want the cheapest Mondeo to run, the diesels operating costs are the most attractive, with the highest fuel economy and lowest CO2 in the range. This also means that this version is a wise bet if you are a company car driver, as it offers low costs and considerable fuel economy.
Most sales are aimed at company car drivers, with a much smaller proportion being bought by private buyers. The latter should still be able to negotiate a decent discount, but if you consider getting a better deal from a broker, be aware that you will be buying from stock and, consequently, any desired options might be missing from the list.
