Original parts Ford Mondeo 2000-2007
Ford launched a class leader in 2000 with the third generation Mondeo Mk3. Spacious and comfortable, the car was also pleasant to drive. While the diesel engines were a great improvement over those in the old model, it was only with the introduction of TDCi engines in November 2001 that they became truly competitive. The first major change to the Mondeo came in the summer of 2003, with improved quality and a higher level of available equipment, while it underwent further revisions in 2005 with an aesthetic and technical facelift.
The high-performance ST220 was joined by a fast Tdci diesel in 2004. It quickly lost value due to the numbers sold to fleets that then came onto the second-hand market, but that means it now has excellent value.
Mondeo Mk3 practicality and ENCAP safety
Mondeo received a four-star rating (out of five) for occupant protection in official European crash tests, which is behind many alternatives but still respectable - when it was launched, no car achieved the maximum star rating. All models are equipped with front, side, and curtain airbags, while electronic stability control is standard on high-spec models, while optional in other parts of the range.
A minimum load space of 500 liters is good by todays standards and excellent for a car launched in 2000, while the hatchback can expand up to 1,370 liters with the rear seats folded. Mondeo also has generous door bins and a good-sized glovebox.
The driving position of Mondeo 3 should suit people of most sizes, with a height and reach adjustable steering wheel, as well as good seat adjustment. The interior quality is generally good, although it was improved in the summer of 2003, with the option of integrated Sony audio systems, whose glossy black finish looks much more classic than standard Ford audio systems.
The availability of the heated "Quickclear" windshield on more models means that frosty mornings dont require delay.
All second-generation Mondeos come standard with four electric windows and air conditioning. The interior is spacious (rear passengers have about as much space as in the old Ford Scorpio), and the seats are comfortable. Engine noise can be an issue on early 2.0TD models, although the TDCi diesels are much better, while sportier models with larger wheels can transmit a fair degree of road noise through the cabin. From the summer of 2003, top models were available with heated and ventilated front seats and heated rear seats.
Prices are competitive, and you can usually get some kind of deal on a used model, but the sheer volume on the market means depreciation is heavy. Fuel consumption is average for the class - if youre a medium-high mileage driver, it would be worth choosing a TDCi model. Ford maintenance prices and auto parts are reasonable.
Mondeo is an eco-friendly choice for green buyers. With an average of 178 g/km CO2 across the line, its emissions are quite low for a mid-size range. However, its worth noting that the line supports a large number of diesel models, bringing the average down and offering buyers more low-emission version options. Diesels typically produce less CO2 than gasoline engines with similar power. Eco-conscious buyers should consider the 2.0-liter diesel, which is one of the greenest models in the range. The range is also quite economical, with an average of 41 mpg.
Ford Mondeo has been quite reliable, with the exception of a few recalls to correct build defects, and some customers found issues with the handbrake in 2001 (which didnt hold the car stationary after parking), which was not subject to a recall, but would have been rectified at the next facelift. A few others also reported issues with the rear suspension of older cars, which could be expensive to replace.
The most popular Mondeos will be the diesel or 1.8-liter gasoline models. Although the 2.0 turbodiesel model was a vast improvement over the 1.8 TD in the previous Mondeo, it still lost out to similar engines from Peugeot, Citroen, Renault, and Volkswagen in terms of efficiency and refinement. At the end of 2001 Ford launched 2.0 TDCi which adopted the latest diesel technology.
It produces 130 HP and offers an excellent combination of performance, fuel economy, and refinement. The original 2.0 CV with 115 HP ran until 2002 before being replaced with a 115 HP version of the 2.0 TDCi, which is a much superior engine. In 2004, a high-performance 2.2-liter TDCi with 155 HP was introduced, powering the sporty ST version and the luxury versions Ghia, Ghia X, and Titanium.
In August 2005, Ford launched a 90 HP version of the 2.0 TDCi, aimed at company car drivers, which, although lacking power compared to the 115 HP diesel, doesnt feel much slower on the road. The 1.8-liter gasoline engine is a decent engine for the entry version of the car, although the 2.0-liter feels much more lively, with a small penalty on fuel consumption.
In 2003, Ford launched a gasoline engine with "direct injection," called 1.8 SCi, which promised better fuel consumption in everyday driving compared to a conventional gasoline engine, but also improved performance. Besides feeling a bit more lively than the standard 1.8-liter, it also sounds sporty when revved. The SCi engine is only available on the Ghia, Ghia X, and Titanium models.
The fastest Mondeo is the ST220, which has a 3.0-liter V6 with 226 HP, sprinting from 0-100 km/h in 7.6 seconds and with a top speed of 250 km/h. A less powerful version of this 3.0-liter engine is also available in the luxury versions of the Mondeo, as well as in a higher 170 HP 2.5-liter V6. Mondeo came equipped with a five-speed manual gearbox as standard when it was launched (a six-speed version became an option later), but newer cars will have a six-speed gearbox as standard.
When Ford launched the Focus in 1998, it marked the beginning of a new generation of models that were satisfying to drive. Mondeo offered a mix of handling and an extremely comfortable ride, which only a few alternatives have approached since. Intuitive to drive, Mondeos steering has excellent weighting. High levels of grip and good chassis control inspire confidence when driving the Mondeo on winding roads. The ST versions have a slightly less comfortable ride due to their larger wheels and stiffer suspension. The range was added in 2002 with the launch of the 251 Km/h sport model of the ST220.
On the road
If it werent for this blue oval looking back from the steering wheel boss, you might mistake the interior of the Mondeo for a VW Passat whose owner had a penchant for shiny dials. Its all logical, though not perfectly perfect, especially if your hands are anything but dainty. If thats the case, every time you select third or fifth gear, the back of your hand will change the radio station. The handbrake is poorly positioned, with just enough room for arteries or a thumb.
Youll forgive Mondeo its minor ergonomic practices when you get on the road. Most of the engines offered were all-new at launch, the exception being the 2.5-liter 170 HP V6: fair enough - there wasnt much wrong with that. Since then, a second 217bhp V6 has been developed for the flagship ST220, this one being 3.0 liters in size.
All the Duratec HE 1.8 and 2.0-liter gasoline engines used in the more humble Mondeo are superb, developing 123 and 143 HP respectively and feeling quicker due to strong low-end torque. They are a sack of potatoes (20 kg) lighter than rival engines, which helps performance (sixty from rest takes 9.8 seconds in the 2.0-liter) and are very rigid, which helps achieve Passat-level refinement. Although refinement is not the main forte of the 2.0-liter TDdi 113 HP turbo diesel engine, Duratorq, it produces extremely decent fuel figures (up to 48mpg on the combined cycle). Its still not the quietest unit of its kind (transit associations show here), but performance (rests to sixty in 10.6 on the way to 209 km/h) is a reward. Understand, if you really want to notice a step forward in diesel stakes, then you need to try the TDCi common rail turbo diesel unit: refined and fast, this is a much more impressive proposition and a tribute to Fords Diesel Center of Excellence based in Dagenham. Although not as quiet as the 1.8-liter TDCi unit fitted to the Focus and easy to stall when pulling away from junctions, it is otherwise an extremely competent, fast, tractable, and almost economical engine. As with all Mondeo, handling is beyond reproach. While other rivals have outpaced Ford in terms of interior quality, packaging, and engine technology, nothing in this class approaches Mondeos ability to tackle a corner.
