Original parts Ford Mondeo 1993-1996

Its hard to believe that Mondeo Mk1 has been with us since 1993. Perhaps this is because it never had the difficult gestation of cars like the Sierra, Cougar, Scorpio, and Ka, models that took time to gain popular acceptance. There was never any rocky probation period in the publics view of the Mondeo. The press liked it, and major award followed important award, including the European Car of the Year title for 1994. Yes, it may have initially been nicknamed Mundano by some wagons, but thats only because it didnt represent a quantum leap in style in the same way the Sierra was a generation from the Cortina.

Despite the evolutionary lines, Mondeo was on the streets and represented a moving target with which Vauxhalls Vectra never managed to come to terms. Excess supply ensured there were plenty of used negotiations, and it pays to shop around to find one that suits your needs, so take your time, look at a few, and drive a hard bargain.

Models covered: First generation Mondeo - 1993-1996 (1.6, Hatchback, Estate [base, Aspen, LX, GLX] / 1.8 sedan, Hatchback, Estate [LX, GLX, Ghia] / 2.0 sedan, Hatchback, Estate [LX, GLX, Si, Si 4x4, Ghia, Ghia X] / 1.8TD sedan, Hatchback, Estate [base, Aspen, LX, GLX, Ghia, Ghia 4x4, Ghia X] 2.5 Sedan, Hatchback, Estate [GLX, Si, Ghia, Ghia X])

Ford Mondeo Mk1 History

Just as the once-controversial Sierra was subsumed into the mainstream, Ford announced the Mondeo to replace it in February 1993. Initially, there was a choice of three petrol engines - a 1.6, a 1.8 and a 2.0 liter, all 16v units. There was also a 1.8-liter turbo diesel. Two spacious body styles - a five-door hatch and a sedan - were offered at launch, with estates following a few months later.

Specifications? Well, they followed the established Ford path, ranging from base (eventually Aspen) and LX through GLX to Ghia. All were very well specified, with even entry-level cars featuring a drivers airbag, tinted glass, power steering, and an alarm system. Immobilizers were added in August 1994.

In October 1994, a V6 24v variant was added to the range in all three body styles, with base, Si, and plus Ghia specimens. By this time, you could identify all Ghia models by the shiny chrome front grille. In January 1995, Aspen (previously a special edition) became the entry-level model.

In April 1995, 4x4 models of 2.0 liters were introduced (but lasted less than a year), while in October 1995, Ghia X was added as an optional model for all petrol models except 1.6 and 1.8 liters. This allowed Ford to reduce the price of Ghia variants (they also reduced equipment, so air conditioning became optional instead of standard).

What you get from a Ford Mondeo Mk1

If all the PR is enough to get you behind the wheel, you wont be disappointed. Besides the standard airbag, theres enough technology built into this car to make it a true drivers car. Even the most basic Mondeo is quite well equipped. In most later LX models (by far the best sellers), youll find double central locking and Fords clever "Quickclear" windshield. Thats aside from the drivers airbag, power steering, anti-theft alarm with immobilizer, tinted glass, adjustable steering wheel, "light-on" warning buzzer, front electric windows, tilt/slide sunroof, and a good quality stereo radio cassette.

Youre unlikely to be thrilled by the computer-assisted styling of the first generation, but you wont be offended either. In fact, the complete car is an excellent piece of design, especially where the elegantly curved dashboard and door casings are well built from solid materials.

What to look for

Dont worry about those rear spoilers you see on Mondeos at speed - we havent heard of one detaching in anything other than a touring car race. More concerns are fuel injection systems that can clog - youll notice poor idling and pickup. Cylinder head corrosion indicates that the antifreeze hasnt been changed on the two-year cycle Ford suggests. The timing belt should be changed at 100,000 km - check that it has been done. Rust shouldnt be a problem, although the front scheme of older cars may be corroded. Noises from the rear suspension suggest worn shock absorbers. Steering should feel precise. Otherwise, check the power steering drive belts and watch for leaks around hose joints. If first gear is difficult to find, a worn selector is the problem. Meanwhile, a vague rubbery feel could indicate worn tie rods. Avoid high-mileage examples, betrayed by sagging drivers seats and shiny gear knobs.

Spare parts

Approximate prices for a 1.6. A front wing costs around 172 euros, a headlight around 175 euros, a front indicator 15 euros, and a windshield just under 305 euros. A clutch kit costs around 190 euros, and a complete exhaust system (including catalyst) would set you back about 500 euros. Fords policy is that for older cars, original parts are more expensive than the same part from a new car up to a year old.

Take a seat behind the wheel, and you immediately feel comfortable. The instruments are clear, the stalks are logical and sweet in action, and the other controls are generally well placed. Regardless of the model youve chosen, the seat is supportive, adding to an overall driving position that is excellent thanks to a steering wheel that can be adjusted for both rake and reach. The cabin is also spacious unless youre well over six feet and sitting in the back. So far, perhaps few surprises - Fords have always been well packaged. The true strengths of the design appear once you venture onto the road. These are some of the most enjoyable drivers cars the company has ever made.

Overall

Nowadays, Ford Mondeo represents the keyword for excellence in the family saloon, but it took us some time to get the "message." This makes earlier cars criminally undervalued assets that the used buyer would do well to exploit. For around 3500 euros, a well-cared-for 1995 V6 Ghia represents a lot of car with a good life left on the clock. Recommended.
