Original parts Ford Ka 2009-2016

The original Ford Ka was an extremely popular model, especially among those who wanted a small, cheap car to run and easy to drive. Its cartoonish appearance made it stand out, and although it was almost the size of a Fiesta, it was popular for those who wanted something funky but also economical.

Its replacement is somewhat more conservative in terms of style but is based on those strong foundations. It offers better comfort, refinement, and fuel economy, but costs a little more. It is certainly a much more grown-up car, especially inside, thanks to the well-built and neat cabin. Of course, it retains those cheeky aspects of the original and is easy and pleasant to drive, especially in the city, while the smooth ride means it is incredibly comfortable. This second-generation Ford Ka was developed alongside the Fiat 500 and uses the same petrol and diesel engines as the Italian hatchback. There is a 1.2-liter 70 HP petrol and a 1.3-liter, but the most popular is the 1.2-liter. If you are insistent that you want a diesel, there is a 1.3-liter TDCi with 75 HP. It feels substantial but is not faster. However, it is more economical, with an achievable average of 67mpg. Both engines emit less than 120g/km CO2, making them cheaper for taxation. All Ka models come with a five-speed gearbox, with a high-mounted shift lever, close to the steering wheel.

The Fiat 500 achieved a maximum five-star rating for adult occupant protection in official European crash tests, however, the Ka received only four stars. Unlike the Fiat (which comes with seven standard airbags), the Ford has driver and passenger front airbags as standard fitment - side airbags for pelvis and thorax, along with curtain airbags, are optional.

Therefore, Ford Kas safety levels are not as good as its rivals. ESP stability control is also an option on all models, but all cars (except Studio) get ISOFIX mounting points.

It may seem larger, but the Ka is actually the same length as the initial model, and at about 3.5 meters, it is very easy to place in tight parallel parking spaces. The reason it seems larger is a higher roofline, which helps improve rear passenger space. Like the previous Ka, legroom is still tight, but headroom is much better and feels less claustrophobic than many small three-door cars.

The trunk is 20% larger than before and with 224 liters of luggage, with the rear seats, it is similar in size to the Vauxhall Agila. At the front, there is decent storage, with a shallow cuff in front of the handbrake, a useful slot for iPods or mobile phones, an impressively large glovebox, plus door pockets that are the ideal shape and size for a CD case.

Interior of a Ford Ka Mk2 2009-2016
Unlike the original Ka, there are no painted metals on display, instead, the interior has the feel of a much larger car. Its no small surprise that there is much in common with the Fiat 500, with the same column bars and some familiar switches, but it has a modern style with a neat layout of the central console and funky circular vents.

The three-spoke steering wheel has a sporty feel, and the neat dials behind are easy to read, while there is a wide range of interior colors and shades to brighten things up. The only option is a rather cheap stereo.
Comfort levels of the Ford Ka are excellent: its main strength is the superior smooth ride, which does an excellent job of handling uneven or bumpy surfaces and makes for a very refined journey - especially on the highway. Engine and road noise are not too intrusive, and the Ka feels more suited for long-distance cruising than the initial car. That being said, the seats lack support, although they are comfortable.
The steering wheel does not adjust for reach, and the seat could do with slightly lower positioning, but the driving position is still good, and this does not detract from the comfort level.

Maintaining a Ford Ka mk2
The running costs of the Ford Ka are not too onerous. Thanks to affordable prices and decent equipment levels on most models (apart from the base Studio level), you dont have to spend a lot of money on options. Both engines are cheap in terms of tax and economy - the popular 1.2-liter is capable of 55mpg, while maintenance, parts, and insurance costs are low. Ford says it will not sell the Ka to rental companies, which should help maintain healthy residual values.

The Ka is very environmentally friendly, and both engines emit less than 120g/km CO2, making them cheap for taxation. The Ford Ka emissions are best with diesel, plus it can return 67mpg. The 1.2-liter petrol is not far behind with an economy of 55mpg. An ECOnetic version is in the pipeline - which emits less than 100g/km CO2 and will not be taxable.

The reliability of the Ford Ka should not be too concerning. It is based on Fiat components, and the Italian hatchback has proven reliable so far, while both engines have been well-proven.

Ford Ka Engines
Ford Kas performance levels are what you might call adequate. Two engines are available in the Ka, but the best seller is the 1.2-liter with 69 HP. Despite its modest output, it is surprisingly nippy around town, with decent pickup from low speeds. Of course, with a 0-100 km/h time of 13.1 seconds, linear acceleration is relaxed.

However, it remains smooth, even up to high speeds - although it can get a bit vocal when pushed hard. But in everyday driving, it performs well due to its responsive nature and will keep up with fast-flowing highway traffic - plus it can return 55mpg. The other choice is a 1.3-liter TDCi with 75 HP. The extra power from the common rail diesel ensures punchier acceleration than the petrol model, although it is not faster on paper from 0-100 km/h.
It is, however, more economical, with an achievable average of 67mpg. Both engines emit less than 120g/km CO2, making them cheaper for taxation. A smooth five-speed gearbox is the only transmission option, with a high-mounted shift lever, close to the steering wheel.
Since the Ford Ka was developed alongside the Fiat 500 and uses the same platform as its base, it is little surprise that the two are quite similar in terms of vehicle dynamics. However, Ford has changed the Kas suspension, and consequently, there is less body roll in corners and a smoother ride. The steering has also been revised and is more responsive and better weighted than in the Fiat, making the little Ford surprisingly enjoyable on a twisty road and great fun when darting in and out of traffic.
The steering is still light enough to make city driving easy, further aided by good all-around visibility. Despite its small size and weight, the Ka is also very stable on the highway, even in windy conditions.

Should you buy a Ford Ka?
The Ka has plenty of competition in the form of the Hyundai i10, Kia Picanto, as well as the stylish Fiat 500, and while a quick comparison with rivals might lead you to believe it is competitive, the entry-level model doesnt even have air conditioning - a necessity these days. However, once you move up to higher-spec models, it is much better, and the equipment is decent for todays standards.
