Original parts Ford Grand C-Max 2016-2020

Ford Grand C-MAX MK2 with 7 seats is a larger version of the regular C-MAX MPV model and, as you might expect, it rivals other medium-sized family carriers with the "grand" name, such as the Renault Grand Scenic and Citroen Grand C4 Picasso. Other rivals in its sector include the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer, Kia Carens, Toyota Verso, and Volkswagen Touran.

Grand C-MAX received a facelift mid-life in 2015 and still looks quite fresh if a little uninspired on the outside. Inside, the update brought a noticeable improvement in quality and a sleek look that mimics that of the latest Focus hatchback. The model range is familiar and Ford-like, with a varied range of Zetec, Titanium, and Titanium X levels. All are decently equipped, even Zetec benefits from 16-inch alloy wheels, air conditioning, and a DAB radio. Top models offer Fords latest SYNC2 infotainment setup, as well as desirable features such as a panoramic roof and Xenon headlights.

Considering the dimensions of the Grand C-MAX, you will see that it is slightly more compact than the Ford S-MAX and probably a bit more stylish. But it is on price lists about 3,500 euros below the cost of an S-MAX, which is likely the main attraction for anyone considering a Grand C-MAX deal at their local Ford dealer.

However, there is a lot to like about the Grand C-Max besides that 7-seat cabin and its price. The interior is extremely practical, and the car is fun to drive too - much more so than the VW Touran, for example. Throw in a range of efficient diesel and petrol engine options, and the Grand C-MAX appeals to both the head and the heart.

Unlike the smaller 5-seat C-MAX, which is offered with a 1.6-liter entry-level petrol model, the Grand C-MAX only comes with the more powerful EcoBoost petrol and TDCi diesel options. We like the 148 HP 2.0-liter diesel the most, as its huge torque - 400Nm - makes driving the vehicle a breeze. Whatever engine you choose, performance and economy will be respectable. As the name suggests, the Ford Grand C-MAX is a larger, more practical version of the standard C-MAX MPV. Standing alongside cars like the Renault Grand Scenic and Citroen Grand C4 Picasso, the spacious Ford gets seven seats and a range of economical petrol and diesel engines.

Grand C-MAX sits just below the brands largest and most stylish S-MAX, costing about 3,500 pounds. You still get seven seats and a super practical interior, as well as the brands Ford driving experience. It is undoubtedly more fun than a Volkswagen Touran - making it a family car you can buy with both your heart and head.

• The best carriers and MPVs

Unlike the five-seat C-MAX, which is available with a 1.6-liter entry-level petrol engine, Grand C-MAX buyers are limited to EcoBoost petrol and TDCi diesel units. However, theres nothing wrong with whatever you go for, all offer surprising performance and decent running costs. The 2.0-liter 148 HP TDCi model is the range choice if you regularly carry seven passengers due to its 400 Nm torque.

Engines, performance, and driving
Ford Grand C-MAX is softer than the five-seat C-MAX, but it still puts a smile on your face in a way that few MPVs can. It is agile and has excellent steering - its slightly more compliant ride gives it a more elevated look, yet still pleasant. The engine lineup is also impressive. The diesels include a 1.5-liter diesel engine. If you like petrol, there is a pair of 1.0-liter three-cylinder EcoBoost engines. Perhaps surprisingly, they seem more than capable of pulling the Grand C-MAX, although it will struggle with a full load of passengers. If you spend a lot of time with all seven seats in use, we would consider the more powerful 123bhp version - or better yet, one of the frugal petrols mentioned above.

The standard transmission is a six-speed manual, while the Powershift dual-clutch automatic is an expensive option.

Although the standard five-seat Ford C-MAX is a nice car, the same cannot be said for the Grand C-MAX. Despite a mid-life refresh in 2015, the seven-seat model looks a bit awkward due to its high roofline and longer wheelbase, while those sliding doors have not been particularly well integrated into the rear of the car. At least it looks good at the front, with the familiar Ford family face. Starting in 2015, all Titanium and Titanium X models boast an eight-inch SYNC2 touchscreen, giving the dashboard a much more intuitive look. This, added to other style and practicality extras, makes it more appealing. The 17-inch alloys look great, while the LED daytime running lights add a touch of class.

Practicality, comfort, and loading space
Grand C-MAX is a seven-seater? Well, you will be able to seat seven, but there is only enough space in the last row for a couple of small children, and unlike rivals like the Kia Carens and Toyota Verso, the middle seat in the second row is narrower than the two on either side.

If you want more space, its better to buy an S-MAX or a Galaxy, although those sliding doors really help access in car parks. There is also a neat "walk-through" feature, where the small middle seat can fold, allowing easy access to the two final seats. In terms of luggage space, in seven-seat mode, there is only 115 liters of room - barely enough for the weekly shop, but typical of any seven-seater with all seats in place. Fold the third row, and it extends to 448 liters - larger than a Focus - while if you fold all the seats flat, there is 1,715 liters of space, although it is still behind the Renault Grand Scenic. Starting in 2015, all C-MAX now come standard with a space-saving spare wheel.

The driving position is first-class, the raised height offering a commanding view. Moreover, decent reach and steering wheel speed mean finding a comfortable setup is easy. Reliability and safety
Ford grand C-MAX standard ranked 62nd in our 2014 Driver Power survey, and although this is better than the previous model, it is slightly behind the Renault Scenic, which ranked 53rd.

However, the Grand C-MAX is extremely safe, having a maximum five-star Euro NCAP safety rating and a whole range of airbags. Traction and stability control are standard and help maximize grip, while options such as BLISS blind spot warning further enhance safety.
Quite an old model now
To be unclear, car manufacturers do not want to invest much in MPVs at the moment due to the general lack of interest worldwide. Given that the buying public is much more interested in SUVs, there is not a huge market for MPVs like the C-Max - which is why it has remained on sale without major changes since 2011.
What does that mean? Well, it should mean good deals in showrooms, with reasonable financing packages and potentially large discounts, while dealers try to move models while they still can. However, there are other considerations about buying a design that is so old. The C-Max cannot be specified with the latest safety equipment, such as lane-keeping assistance or even LED headlights. It only scored three stars in Euro NCAP safety tests.

It is turbocharged and produces 125 HP, so it punches well above its weight and is actually quite suitable for most of the Grand C-Max. It does struggle somewhat when the car is fully loaded with people and luggage, but as long as you take it relatively easy, it is relaxed, refined, and efficient. It is paired with a six-speed manual gearbox. If you need more but dont want a diesel, there is a 1.5-liter, 150 HP, four-cylinder petrol paired with a six-speed automatic. It is quite powerful, but it would not be our range choice due to its thirst and high emissions.
