Original parts Ford Galaxy 2007-2014

Ford Galaxy has become, due to its danger, the standard by which large MPVs are judged. It is a perennial durable in the sector, always there or thereabouts when challenging for class honors, representing a lasting benchmark from which rivals measure their success or failure. Occasional buyers have long recognized the qualities of the Galaxy. Yes, there are MPVs with more adventurous styling and others with more prestigious badges, but for sheer capacity and the unbridled ability to hit the marks that really matter to family buyers, the Galaxy has been hard to beat. Heres what to look for when pursuing a post-2010 facelifted Mk III version.

Ford Galaxy Mk 3 models year 2007 - 2014
Five-door MPV - Zetec, Titanium, Titanium X.

History
In its genesis, Ford Galaxy was one-third of a joint partnership that included Volkswagen and SEAT. As often happens, three in a relationship were a problem, and the Autoeuropa factory in Palmela, Portugal never attracted the quality issues faced by any of the three brands. Ford needed a higher level of control, and the Galaxy Mk III, introduced in 2006, was an integral affair, built alongside its sibling S-MAX at the Genk plant in Belgium.

Fast forward to 2010, and it was time for the Galaxy to get a rework in what remained a fast-moving market sector. With a revised exterior design, upgraded interior materials and features, a range of more efficient traction devices, and a series of driver-oriented technologies aimed at improving safety and comfort, this was more than the usual lights, grille, and bumper refresh.

The new 2.3-liter EcoBoost petrol engine joined the two diesel engines 115, 140, and 163PS of 2.0-liter Duratorq TDCi. Additionally, the Ford PowerShift dual-clutch transmission was introduced as standard on the EcoBoost petrol engine and as a cost option with the 2.0 140PS and 2.0 163PS Duratorq diesels. A blind information system was also debuted. These updates led the Galaxy to its replacement in 2015.

What you get
Personally, were not entirely sure this Galaxy doesnt actually look better than its sleeker stablemate S-MAX - but thats just an opinion. Certainly, the cosmetic changes Ford made as part of this MK3 models facelift did no harm. It had a smarter, more sculpted hood, a more distinctive front grille with chrome inserts, and revised front fog lights, plus trendy daytime running lights for the more advantageous versions. The roof got bolder silver rails, while redesigned rear lights adorned the back.

But what really matters to used buyers is how this car functions as a family workhorse. Well, weve tested it on long and short trips, loaded and unloaded, packed with kids and loaded with luggage, and there are a few things weve noticed. The excellent ride quality, for example, is particularly useful when it comes to avoiding car sickness in small passengers. Then theres the way the huge glass area lights up the cabin and ensures everyone has a clear view.

It also means excellent visibility from behind the wheel, where its easy to find the ideal driving position, thanks to the amount of seat and wheel adjustment. Rather ambitiously, Ford wanted this car to appeal not only to someone who might consider a large people carrier but also to owners of prestigious executive spaces, hence the high quality of fit and finish around the cabin. In the rear row, theres decent room for three adults, and the cabins width is handy if youre trying, for example, to fit three child seats there.

Even if an adult is seated in the rear row, theres little sense of claustrophobia, with Galaxys designers making good use of the available space, the 6 centimeters of height this car gains over its stablemate S-MAX being put to good use. The cabin floor even tilts slightly towards the back so that people in the rear can see whats happening in front. When youre not using the seats in the third or second row, the innovative FoldFlatSystem (which offers no less than 32 seat permutations) allows all the rear seats to retract into the floor to present a vast double loading area with a double bed of 2325 liters (325 liters more than youd get in an S-MAX) with anchor points to keep things in place if you cant resist the sporty character of this Ford. Even with all 7 seats occupied, theres still an offer of 308 liters.

What to look for
The good news is that reliability is much better for these Belgian-built cars than it ever was for the Portuguese-built Mk1 and MK2 models. The bad news? Well, there isnt much. Owners have reported issues with batteries and the occasional key going on the fritz, but most major mechanical parts are rock solid. Make sure the automatic Powershift versions havent been subjected to heavy towing.

Spare parts
Estimated prices, based on a 2.0 TDCi. A clutch assembly is around 240 Euros, an exhaust system around 800 euros (including catalytic converter), and a replacement alternator around 320 euros. Front shock absorbers are about 120 euros and rear around 40 euros each. A package of original Ford filters and Ford 5w30 oil somewhere around 120 euros

On the road
Ford only offers large MPV buyers a selection of two completely different models, the same platform providing not only this Galaxy but the more sport-oriented S-MAX model. The S-MAX is an MPV for enthusiastic drivers who dont really want a people carrier, and a surprising amount of its dynamic personality has been transferred to this Galaxy intact, despite this cars higher center of gravity and softer ride.

Essentially, what you lose in cornering and body control, you gain in smoothness and comfort, but even so, this can still be a rewarding car to drive, as if it shrinks around you on the open road. Consequently, large MPVs that handle better than this are a rare rarity, especially if you opt for the smart CCD active suspension system, which gives the Galaxy extra agility and safety, especially when heavily loaded.

The two Fords share exactly the same range of engines, with the most important news at the launch of this facelifted MK3 model being the introduction of the 2.0-liter Ecoboost SCTi 203PS turbocharged petrol unit. Even with the standard six-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, which absorbs a bit of its power, at sixty from rest, with a solid torque of 300 Nm, it takes just 8.5 on the way to 135 km/h. This is significantly faster than the fastest diesel option, but this petrol variant achieves 12mpg from the fuel yield of that model, while being much more refined.

Post-2011 facelift Mk3 Galaxy models also featured the old normally aspirated 2.0-liter Ford petrol unit, but if you encounter one of these, its probably best to ignore it and, like most Galaxy customers, choose the diesel option. These TDCi variants have a 2.0-liter size, with the 115PS engine struggling a bit to shift a fully loaded car upwards. Those who prefer a bit of cox should stick to the 140 or 163PS models.

Galaxy comes with a good range of engines. There are two petrols, a 2.0-liter with 145PS and a 2.3-liter with 161PS, both being smooth and quiet with good performance. The larger engine is only available with an automatic gearbox, so its actually slower than the 2.0-liter from 0-100 km/h, plus its thirsty, with an average fuel economy of just 29mpg.

However, diesel makes sense, especially if you need to regularly transport a full complement of passengers. Theres a 1.8 TDCi, which is available with either 100PS or 125PS. Emissions and economy are pretty identical for both, but the more powerful engine has better pulling power, making overtaking a little easier. Its also the best choice for a combination of economy and performance with 0-100 km/h in 11.4 seconds and 46 mpg achievable.

The most powerful 2.0 TDCi has 140PS and is also available with an automatic gearbox, although this records a drop in economy from 46mpg to 38mpg. But the best engine in the range is the 2.2 TDCi with 175PS. It can sprint from 0-100 km/h in just 9.1 seconds, has immense pulling power, but is also smooth and refined.

It may be nearly five meters long and have a high roofline, but the Galaxy doesnt handle like a regular people carrier. In fact, its incredibly car-like, with an agile nature that belies its size, ensuring reassuring steering and great composure in corners. Theres very little body roll, thanks to a fairly stiff suspension, although the trade-off is a firm ride thats not as cosseting as other carriers.

The steering is well-weighted at higher speeds but light enough to make tight maneuvers.

Thanks to a car-like driving position, the Galaxy is easy to drive, and the thin windshield pillars mean visibility, especially at junctions, is good. The layout is neat, if not particularly adventurous, while the silver center console adds a touch of finesse. The stereo and air conditioning controls are easy to use, although its a little less intuitive on cars with optional sat nav and touchscreen.

Abundant adjustment of the steering wheel and seat, plus the gear lever is positioned up, giving an almost sporty feel. Were less convinced by the quirky handbrake handle that resembles the throttle in an aircraft, however, an electronic handbrake is available as an option. Facelifted 2010 cars get LED interior lights that provide better illumination.

Thanks to the high shape, theres plenty of space in the Galaxy, and even those relegated to the rear seats get good headroom and adequate legroom - although theyre only ideal for children on long journeys. All rear seats slide and recline individually, but theyre quite firm and seem to lack padding and support.

The firm ride also affects the overall comfort level, although this is less noticeable on the highway. Facelift models from 2010 were equipped with thicker windshields, meaning wind and road noise are kept to a minimum, making the Galaxy extremely quiet at high speeds. Everyone on board gets plenty of space, with the two rear seat rows benefiting from improved space in all directions compared to the previous Galaxy model.

Additionally, all seats, even those in the third row, can slide back and forth, and the seatbacks can be reclined to provide better comfort for occupants. An optional glass roof brightens the interior for rear passengers as well. The front seats adjust for all shapes and can be specified with electrically adjustable seats
