With a major design in 2000, the Galaxy distanced itself from the Volkswagen Group platforms. With different badges, Ford Galaxy, Volkswagen Sharan, and Seat Alhambra all targeted the same market. The flagship engine was the 24-valve 206 hp 2.8-liter V6. The 1.9-liter diesel engine was 90, 115, 130, or 150 hp, with high-pressure fuel injection to provide remarkable torque, reduce exhaust gas emissions, and reduce fuel consumption. The engine range was completed by the 2.3-liter DOHC engine with improvements for better handling and lower emissions. Transmissions were 6-speed manual and Select-Shift automatic, allowing sequential manual shifting if necessary. A major innovation was the new stability system (ESP) as standard equipment on the V6 and optional for the 115 hp diesel engine.
 
The post-2000 Galaxy model was a vast improvement in almost all aspects.

History
The Galaxy started from a joint development between Ford and Volkswagen, ultimately responsible for the Galaxy, VW Sharan, and SEAT Alhambra. Together, Ford and VW jointly funded the design program and built a new factory in Portugal to handle production.
 
Practically, Fords Galaxy and VW Sharan have the same 2.8-liter V6 engine (the VR6 unit used in the top mkIII VW Golf and Corrado coupe) and the 90 hp and 115 hp 1.9-liter turbo models (also sourced from VW). Ford also added a 2.3-liter engine option from the Scorpion sedan.
 
The range was substantially revised in the summer of 2000, with new styles, interior upholstery, and dashboard. An old 2.0-liter engine was removed, as was the slow 4x4 V4. The Ford 2.3 now powered the entry-level models, plus there was a revised 201 hp 2.8-liter V6.
 
In the spring of 2003, the Galaxy range was revised again, with the addition of a TDI130 version. Then, in the spring of 2005, a 150 hp derivative of that TDI powerplant was introduced. A brand-new Galaxy arrived in mid-2006, accompanied by its sportier sister vehicle, the S-Max, to replace this model.
 
What you get
Inside the heavily reworked cabin after 2000, everything is much more luxurious - and very different from the utilitarian feel of the previous generation model. Soft, beautifully textured plastics, subtle wood strips, and silver glints combine to create one of the most beautiful Ford interiors seen at that stage - and certainly the most practical. To complement the larger door pockets, two substantial storage boxes were incorporated into the dashboard, in response to customers who wanted to be able to hide clutter after a weekend and reclaim their car as a business vehicle for the workweek.
 
Once youre behind the wheel, there was never anything wrong with the first model, but, as weve suggested, this later version marked a definite step up. The extra feel was in line with Fords stated goal at the time of stealing customers from the executive saloon sector - although this never materialized. The first thing you notice is the four-spoke steering wheel and the aluminum-look instrument. An analog clock in Ka style sits in the center of the dashboard, in traditional contrast to the gadget in the center console that was redesigned to accommodate an optional satellite navigation system.
 
Those familiar with VW and Audi products from a similar period will recognize most of the stalks and switches - which is not bad, as no one has improved them. Fords strengths lie in packaging (hence high levels of equipment, including air conditioning, ABS, and dual airbags) and strict pricing, which helped make the Galaxy popular and well-regarded. The options list was vast, including everything from a refrigerator to a multimedia system capable of entertaining rear passengers with DVD or computer video games via color screens mounted in the back of the front seat headrests, so you may encounter some extremely well-equipped examples.
 
The Galaxy seats seven people in good comfort (although a more spacious six-seat version was offered). The seats are supportive, although the rear row will prove a bit of a squeeze for larger adults, and the vehicle is easy to drive. Parking is not as complicated as the Galaxys size might lead you to believe, with decent visibility and light steering.
 
Spare parts
(Estimated prices, based on Galaxy 2.3 LX. A clutch assembly is around 130 euros, an exhaust system around 760 euros (including catalytic converter), and a replacement alternator around 320 euros. Shock absorbers are approximately 45 euros and rear ones just under 35 euros.
 
On the road
Those who have never driven a Galaxy before will be pleasantly surprised by its car-like qualities, the driving dynamics of this version were further refined with more responsive steering and slight suspension changes. Handling is exemplary, and the Galaxy does not roll, spin, or match many of its early-century MPV counterparts. Nor do you need a period of acclimatization before you can drive it quickly.
 
There are three trim levels: LX, Zetec, and Ghia, the latter two including side airbags and a radar parking system, which should avoid a lot of supermarket rockets. Opt for the 201 hp V6 flagship, and youll also get ESP (Electronic Stability Program), a system that will override both the brake and throttle to keep you on the tarmac if you enter a corner too quickly. Which is perhaps just as well, given that this glorious lightweight alloy powerplant is fast enough to make the Galaxy something of a wolf in sheeps clothing, with progress to 60 mph in 9.9 seconds, accompanied by a satisfying howl, but multiplied on the way to a maximum of about 135 mph.
 
On paper, the 115 hp turbo diesel version seems much slower (13.1 seconds 100 km/h), but, in practice, due to its lighter weight and impressive speed pulling power, it should feel just as fast in real terms. Plus, you can expect to travel almost twice as far on a tank of fuel (with an average consumption of over 40mpg). The latest 130 and 150 TDI engines are the ones to look for if you can afford them, they feel truly fast and practically reduced the V6 at the end of the Galaxys life. 6-speed manual gearboxes were standard on diesel and V6, but not on the Ford 2.3. Auto Tiptronic "SelectShift" (with "manual" up and down shift option) was offered on this 2.3 and V6.
 
Overall
The Galaxy was a deserved market leader. It fills a niche for someone looking to transport a family in comfort but still wants a vehicle that can generate a little driving satisfaction. New MPVs are bigger and smarter, but none of the models from the Galaxys days have eclipsed its mix of talents. Buyers should remember, however, that the same applies to the VW Sharan and SEAT Alhambra Galaxy vehicles, so dont limit your search to Ford dealers.
