Original parts Ford Fusion

Ford Fusion is a Mini MPV from the B segment with front-wheel drive, with five doors, manufactured and marketed by Ford Europe from 2002 to 2012 in a single generation.

Sharing the platform with the Ford Fiesta supermini, the Fusion was longer, wider, and taller than the Fiesta - with high seats with h-point, theater-style rear seating, and 60/40 split-folding rear seats, a front passenger seat that folds flat, and a loading floor with a loading threshold. Ford marketed the Fusion as an urban vehicle, with its Fusion nameplate referring to the combination of small hatchback, MPV, and SUV design features: economical operation from B-class bases; improved handling as well as increased capacity, accessibility, passenger, and cargo volume from its tall configuration - but notably without all-wheel drive.

After initially debuting as a concept at the 2001 Geneva Motor Show and in production form at the same show a year later, Fusion sales were launched at the end of 2002. The Fusion was manufactured at the Ford-Köln-Niehl assembly and was exported to over 50 countries, including Angola, Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, and South Africa.

In November 2005, Ford marketed a slightly facelifted Fusion with revised front and rear lights, side moldings, door mirrors, a brighter exterior color palette, a revised interior design with soft-touch materials, and an analog instrument display.

Ford in Brazil and several Latin American countries marketed a crossover SUV variant, as the Ford EcoSport, with a revised design and increased ground clearance for light off-roading.

The Fusion received a four-star NCAP crash safety rating and was succeeded in November 2012 by the B-Max.

The Ford Fusion is based on the Fiesta but aims to offer a more practical car with an SUV-like design. It has higher sides than the Fiesta and a higher driving position, although it is not a tall 4x4. Some buyers like it for the ease of entry and exit, although many avoid it for its dull appearance. Like the Fiesta, there is a good range of engines and devices, and since it is a modern generation Ford, it rides and handles with flair.

A lot of cabin space

The Ford Fusion is effectively an enhanced version of the previous Fiesta. The high driving position is comfortable, and many owners praise it for how easy it is to get in and out without contorting. The wide windshield offers a good view ahead and also provides a sense of space and airiness in the cabin. Although there is plenty of space for the driver and passengers to feel comfortable, the driving position is compromised by limited steering wheel adjustment. However, there is plenty of space in the rear seats for two adults or three children, although the Fusions claims to MPV-dom are cut by rear seats that do not fold or tumble as most modern carriers do. However, the boot is a good size and larger than that of a Fiesta. It is also easier to load.

Basing the Fusion on the previous generation Fiesta was a good move on Fords part, as the Fiesta is a beacon of good handling and superior quality. For the Fusion to be taller, Ford did not sacrifice much of these qualities, and the Fusion handles well on the UKs rougher roads. However, the Fusion is based on a generation of Fiesta that has now been surpassed for some time, so it is inevitable that the Fusion now feels a little behind the best in this niche sector. It still handles with a bit of flair, but it is too large in corners for the Fusion to be considered anything other than a second choice for most buyers.

The Ford Fusion safety record is based on a decent Euro NCAP crash test score of four stars, aided by side impact door beams and a rigid body structure. The seats are equipped with anti-submarine ramps to enhance occupant safety, preventing passengers from sliding under the seatbelts in frontal collisions. Side and curtain airbags are optional, and you have to pay extra for ESP.

Security is quite good, and all Fusion models come with remote central locking, deadlocks, and an immobilizer, but the Zetec model lacks a standard alarm.
You wont have many complaints about the practicality of the Ford Fusion. If you need a lot of space, then the Fusion is a good choice. It doesnt look particularly stylish - inside or out - but it certainly gets the job done well. With a large trunk, a spacious cabin, and foldable rear seats, the Fusion can store an impressive load of over 1000 liters, further aided by the foldable front passenger seat, which allows for the storage of longer items. However, it lacks any full folding rear seat system and is not as versatile as other small but spacious cars like the Honda Jazz.

Fusion Interior
The upright position is excellent for easy access, offering a better driving position and extra space for rear passengers. Visibility is excellent, and the large door mirrors provide a good view back. However, the rear window is a bit small due to the slightly tapered design of the Fusions cabin. Surprisingly, the optional roof-mounted foldable DVD player does not impede rear visibility, thanks to the cars high roof.

The matte dashboard panel is perfectly finished, looks durable enough to withstand daily scratches and wear, but looks a bit dated and budget-friendly.

Ford Fusion comfort levels are quite high. Improving on the generous interior space of the Fiesta and the headroom increase, the Fusion is tall on the outside, large on the inside, and the upright seat position creates extra legroom in the front and back. The seats are also firm and supportive, ensuring that long journeys are not too taxing - although taller drivers may find it a bit cramped for long-distance driving.

Ford Fusion performance options include petrol and diesel engines.

Petrol engines

There are two petrol engines available in the Fusion - a 1.4-liter and a 1.6-liter, both of which are quiet and smooth at lower revs but lose composure when asked to work harder, such as climbing a steeper section of a country highway. Of course, the Fusion is hardly bought for its performance capabilities and may be a bit slow off the lights, but there is enough power available at higher revs to allow it to keep up with traffic on highways. All models come with a five-speed manual gearbox with positive shifting, while the 1.6-liter engine is available with a four-speed Durashift manual. The 1.4-liter petrol is available with the Durashift EST gearbox - a clutchless manual system that retains most of the control of a manual gearbox but requires only a push or pull of the gear selector to change gear.

Diesel engines

The smaller diesel is a 1.4 TDCI unit that takes 16.3 seconds to reach 100 km/h and feels very slow. The 1.6 TDCi is much better for everyday driving as it offers more punch in the wheel than the petrol. However, both diesels are noisy and feel outdated compared to the latest units in competing models, although the carbon dioxide emissions of 1.1,0mpg and 122 g/km do not penalize your wallet.
