Original parts Ford Focus C-Max 2003-2007

Ford Focus C-MAX was launched in 2003. What exactly was it trying to be? It didnt offer any additional seating capacity over the standard Ford Focus and didnt look as good. On the other hand, it was a bit quite expensive and didnt feel as sharp. No wonder sales were initially a bit low. After a while, word got around that the C-MAX was a car worth having. Well equipped with practical features and riding on the next-generation Focus chassis, it may not have been as sporty as the old Focus, but it offered more for the family motorist.

Models covered:

5dr mini-MPV: 1.6, 1.8, 2.0, 1.6, 2.0 turbo diesel Studio, LX, Zetec, Ghia, Ultima

A second generation of the Ford Focus model was derived and into a compact MPV C-Max.

It offered petrol engines of 1.6 liters with 100 HP, 1.6 Ti-VCT with 115 HP, 1.8 with 127 HP and 2.0 liters 147 HP. The diesel engine range could have engines of 1.6 TDCI with 90 HP and 110 HP, 1.8 TDCI with 115 HP and 2.0 TDCI with 140 HP.

History
In terms of issues, its quite nice. The Ford Focus hatchback was so successful that when it came to designing an entirely new model, Ford had quite a task on their hands. Instead of trying to replicate the dynamic feel of the old car, Ford engineers opted instead for a more elevated feel, and the first cars to use the next-generation Focus chassis were the Focus C-MAX mini-MPV and Volvo S40 / V50 models, all of which received critical acclaim as sweet-driving cars.

Focus C-MAX was launched in October 2003 and after a slow start, sales picked up well. Euro IV versions of the diesel engines were offered alongside non-compliant units at a value of around 300 pounds. Towards the end of 2004, a 1.6-liter Ti-VCT petrol engine was added to the range with 115 HP, being slightly faster, more frugal, and more expensive than the existing 1.6 engine, which continued to be offered.

A major facelift in the spring of 2007 brought a revised design borrowed from the larger S-MAX model and emphasized the polished driving dynamics of the C-MAX. Sport packages became available on all models from this point.

What you get
Think about how we use our cars for a moment. Many of us rarely use the rear seats for anything but bags and coats. If you have a family in tow, you might need four or even five seats, but if you seriously need seven seats, it makes sense to go with the extra carrying capacity of a full-sized MPV like a Ford Galaxy. Sales figures at the time of the C-MAX launch showed the Citroen Xsara Picasso - a car endowed with a simple quintet of seats - residing in the number one position. Therefore, Fords aim was to build the best and most practical five-seat mini-MPV possible, which would appeal to real-world requirements.

With a wheelbase about 25 mm longer than the Focus, the C-MAX offers a good amount of interior space, aided by a new seating arrangement. The "wheel at each corner" design helps maximize interior dimensions. The styling may disappoint those expecting something as strong as the original Focus, but seeing the Fiesta and Fusion, it may not be surprising that the C-MAX follows a similarly conservative design theme. The metallic finish around the front grille and jewel-effect lights give the car a Mondeo-like nose, while the rear looks distinctly Fiesta. If you had sketched a Ford mini-MPV before even seeing the C-MAX, you probably would have been quite close to the mark. However, this is a market where conservatism tends to pay off.

If the exterior can be a bit upset, C-MAX more than makes up for it with the idea factory that is the cabin. Although it is unlikely to be available for entry-level versions, Fords rear seat flexibility system is indeed the C-MAXs ace in the hole. A 40-20-40 split and tilt rear seat sees the center section fold back into the trunk, leaving the two remaining seats to slide diagonally along a runner towards the center of the car, offering an unprecedented level of space for four. With an extra 100 mm of space and an extra 60 mm of space, even extravagantly sized passengers should be able to find space in the back of the C-MAX. Even in the standard three-step bench position, there is plenty of space, offering 946mm of legroom and 582 liters of luggage space. Completely remove the rear seats and a monstrous 1,692 liters is available. One trick Ford missed was the ability to fold the front passenger seat forward to a flat position.

What to look for
All engines are robust units, and the diesels are particularly good, so there are no major mechanical issues there. The cabins also have reasonable durability, but look for rear damage caused by all. The C-MAX tends not to be driven as hard as regular Focus models, but its still worth keeping an eye on small company miles. Worn carpets and sunken seals are common clues.

Check if all electrical items work correctly, make sure the air conditioning provides cold air immediately after starting the engine, and remember there is no excuse for a failed repair with a car of this age.

Spare parts
Approximately based on a Focus C-MAX 1.6 As you would expect, parts are abundant and relatively cheap. A clutch assembly will be about 215 euros and an alternator should be close to 265 euros.
Front brake sets are around 35 euros and rear shoes around 45 euros and a replacement headlight is close to 140 euros. A complete exhaust is about 275 euros, and a catalyst is about 389 euros. Shock absorbers are around 60 euros each and a water radiator about 140 euros.

On the road
Ford claims that the C-MAX is an amalgam of both the C-segment in which it competes and a combination of maximum comfort, maximum confidence, and maximum control. While some of this sounds like marketing fluff, it is of great importance to Ford that the C-MAX maintains its projector reputation as a sparkling device. Rumor has it that during the development cycle a fully electric steering was developed that provided much better feedback than any electric power steering system to date. The thing was, it still wasnt as good as the existing Focus helm, so despite being undoubtedly clever, it was abandoned. Instead, Ford uses a hydroelectric pump system that offers excellent feel and a three percent fuel economy over conventional systems. This, accompanied by the famous control blade rear suspension, ensures that the C-MAX feels like a very capable handler.

Five engines are offered - a pair of diesels and a trio of petrol units. A 1.8-liter diesel engine with 108 HP, but the choice of the range has to be the 2.0-liter TDCi engine sourced from Peugeot. Backed by a six-speed gearbox, this will be the car that takes the fight to Citroen, Renault, Volkswagen, and Vauxhall. Both are available in Euro III or Euro IV compliant forms. Petrol buyers are hosted with 100 HP 1.6-liter options, 120 HP 1.8-liter, and 145 HP 2.0-liter. The Durashift CVT gearbox is offered with the 1.6 TDCi Euro III diesels.

A four-star Euro NCAP crash test level is good, although it starts to look a bit behind the times when similar cars are awarded full five stars. ABS and dual front airbags are standard and all models (except base cars) have side bags. On the security side, the C-MAX has marked parts and engraved windows, while some models receive an alarm.

The biggest squeeze is the lack of a seven-seat option - a feature that most alternatives now offer. The rear seats are comfortable enough, but they dont fold completely, which limits Fords versatility and, unlike the Galaxy and S-MAX, there are no clever folding systems. Still, its spacious in the back and all three seats can be slid back and forth independently - the boot is too large and with 550 liters of space offers plenty of room for four peoples luggage.
