What is the new Ford Ecosport?

Ford offers the Ecosport for the SUV segment. Based on the latest generation Fiesta - a best-seller from the UK.
This is probably because this car was initially designed to serve emerging markets in South America and Asia, where ground accessibility are crucial factors. So, when Ford started rolling them out from factories in India, China, Thailand, and Brazil in 2013, it was a car built on a strict cost basis and therefore not suitable for more demanding European tastes.

However, this did not stop Ford from slightly pushing the interior, investing in a few new engines, and sending the car here, complete with a rear-mounted spare wheel that brought back nightmares from the 90s of the Vitara. In 2015, Ford got the message and gave the EcoSport a change, removing that unpleasant spare wheel, revising the suspension, and raising the equipment count. Another three years on, and Ford gave the EcoSport another significant facelift and moved production to Romania, in an attempt to cling to an explosion of new rivals, including Citroen C3 Aircross, Hyundai Kona, and Seat Arona. The updates from 2018 include exterior styling to match the Kuga and Edge, an interior to match the new Fiesta, and new design levels with enhanced customization options.

Driving

Much better than it was in the past. Clearly embarrassed by its initial efforts, Ford engineers got down and really tried to squeeze everything they could from a car that didnt have the best start in life. It now makes a fleeting impression of a Fiesta at city speed, which is where it is likely to spend most of its time, but in corners, it tends to roll over and feels much heavier. Its not surprising because it is, but other rivals like the Seat Arona are more closely aligned with the superminis from which they were generated.

Sound insulation plus a suspension and steering tuned specifically for Europe means it doesnt feel as fragile as it once did. It also doesnt ride too poorly, but the soft springs mean youre surrounded on rough road surfaces. The light and sensitive steering will be perfect for 90% of customers, but it lacks the whisper of feedback you get in a Fiesta that makes it a genuine pleasure to drive.

Engine options now include Fords three-cylinder EcoBoost with 123 HP or 138 HP, and a 1.5 diesel with 99 HP or 123 HP. The more powerful diesel is only available with AWD (a first for the EcoSport), while a six-speed manual is standard - only the 123 HP petrol is offered with a six-speed automatic. As you would expect, diesel CO2 emissions are lower, but its the sparkling three-pot petrol we recommend - especially the 138 HP version. OK, so 0-62 mph in 11.8 seconds isnt fast, but the in-gear punch feels healthier than that, it revs back smoothly over 6,000 rpm, and remains quiet and generally discreet the rest of the time.

In all fairness, its a bit of a marked criticism to judge this type of car based on speed, steering feel, and cornering ability, as the vast majority of customers couldnt care less.

In short, while before you would actively steer away from the EcoSport for the secondary way it drove, it is now class-appropriate, but still lacks the spark from the Fiesta bloodline.

Interior of the Ford Ecosport 2018-2020

Now we come to the bit that really matters, but before we jump in, a word for the exterior design. Now, in line with the Kuga and Edge, complete with a snouty grille and slanted headlights, its no longer Fords runt of the litter.

Go for the new ST-Line trim, which adds sport suspension (still not very sporty), a body kit, smoked 17-inch alloys, a flat-bottomed steering wheel, leather seats, and ST scuff plates, and its not a bad-looking thing - as long as you like cars that resemble sports shoes. Even at lower Titanium and Zetec levels, you can let your hair down with a contrasting roof and wing mirrors in white, red, black, or orange.

Front and center inside is a new Sync 3 infotainment system from the new Fiesta. The top-of-the-range 8-inch touchscreen sticks out a bit precariously from the top of the dashboard, but its hard to fault in terms of graphics, content (Apple CarPlay, DAB, Bluetooth present and correct). A 6.5-inch touchscreen is also available, though without satellite navigation, and a B&O audio upgrade with ten speakers is worth the extra 300 euros.

So, five years after launch, the EcoSport finally feels updated, but what hasnt changed are fundamental packaging flaws. While the front row is perfectly spacious and airy, the back bench is cramped, and despite a new clever movable floor, the rear carpet is still limited: 355 liters play 400 liters in the Seat Arona.

EcoSport Owner 2020

It is built on proven engines, gearboxes, and components, so reliability is assured. It will be cheap to run - the thirstiest model is the 123Bhp 1.0 EcoBoost automatic with economic and CO2 figures of 48.7mpg and 134g/km, while the most economical is the 98Chp 1.5 Duratorq TDCi which returns 68.8mpg and 107g/km. Sitting in the middle is the 1.0 EcoBoost manual which will get you 54.3mpg and 119g/km whether you go for the 123bhp or 138bhp version.

The biggest problem with the EcoSport, however, is that while it doesnt offer a real USP over its competitors (aside from supreme brand recognition), its price is high. For example, the latest Citroen C3 Aircross, in top Flair trim and with marginally better performance, is over 2,000 euros less.

Ultimately, the EcoSport might face competition from within, as in mid-2018 Ford will launch the Fiesta Active - a more rugged version of the new Supermini, which should be similarly priced, if not a fraction less. Its a car that for city dwellers will do much the same job, but with the added appeal of novelty.
