Original parts Ford Cougar
Ford Cougar (Mercury Cougar for the USA) was built by the Ford company in the USA between 1999 and 2002.
Replacing the Probe, Cougar is marketed in the United States under the Mercury brand and in Europe under the Ford brand.
Suffering from the poor reputation of its predecessor Probe, the Ford Cougar did not encounter resounding success in the new market. In fact, copies are not common in classified ads. The Ford Cougar is built on the Ford Mondeo platform, therefore, its operating budget and ratings are very attractive.
However, if you are looking for a sporty coupe capable of delighting you or if you regularly take passengers in the back seats, the Cougar will disappoint you very quickly!
models
4 types of Ford Cougar (3 engines)
Manual transmission Cougar 2.0L 16v - 130 HP (Ford Cougar 2L 16V technical sheet)
Manual transmission Cougar 2.5L 24v V6 - 11 CV - 170 HP (Ford Cougar V6 24S technical sheet)
Automatic transmission Cougar 2.5L 24v V6 - 11 CV - 170 HP
Cougar S (ST200) 2.5L 24v - 200 HP (Ford Cougar ST200 technical sheet)
A fourth engine exists for the Cougar, but never initially mounted on the Cougar, it is the 3L V6 Duratec with 220 HP. This engine was sold separately by certain dealers in North America, then it is necessary to perform an "engine swap".
In North America. In France, only the V6 exists in the automatic gearbox, but in North America there was a special limited series of 500 units, which combined the 2.0L engine and an automatic gearbox.
introduction. Ford had difficulty moving past the Capri. The Probe never succeeded, but the Cougar seems like it could have more success. It targets a different customer; older, more loyal, and often female.
Unlike the Capri, you would never claim that the Cougar is "the car you always promised yourself". Despite its bold styling, it is not the kind of coupe that turns heads or has small children asking what it will do. No, the Cougar aims to distance itself from that image. It also seems to disassociate itself from the unfortunately named Probe, a car whose credibility was killed in the UK by its ownership by Gareth Cheeseman, a regular office pest played by comedian Steve Coogan. The Cougar is a completely different proposition.
Introduced in the summer of 1998, the Cougar was advertised by Dennis Hopper in a tribute to the film Easy Rider. Understand the logic behind the ad and you will see Fords target market. It appeals to those who want to live a little dangerously, to relive their youth, while still keeping an element of practicality. Fords research also found that a large portion of Probe buyers are female. So much for Dennis Hopper.
Ford Cougar History
When the Cougar was launched in October 1998, it followed the New-Edge look of Ford seen previously in the Ka and Focus, which immediately preceded the launch of the Cougar. The styling was more extreme, but still more adult than the harmless bloody Probe that preceded it and was met with quiet approval.
It was offered with two engine options, the 2.0 16v 16-cylinder unit and a 2.5-liter V6 for the top-range model. Both cars were competitively priced compared to their immediate rivals, such as the Alfa Romeo GTV and Toyota Celica.
Despite its competence, the Cougar was never marketed as an alternative to more sporty coupes like the Fiat Coupe Turbo or other dynamic options in that price band, such as the Subaru Impreza Turbo. No, the Cougar was a cruiser and a very good one at that. Ultimately, it was discontinued in the spring of 2001.
What you get
Cougar is probably the most practical coupe you can buy. For starters, this is one of the few cars in the class that has a rear hatch, rather than a boot, and the result is probably more luggage space than most owners. The Cougar also leads its sector in terms of rear seat accommodation; this is about as spacious as a car of this kind will ever get.
And probably just as safe. The Cougar is equipped with twin front and side airbags, providing both head and body protection. It is 17% stiffer than a Mondeo and is also stronger in terms of side impacts. In fact, tests suggest that, in a side impact, passengers could be up to three times safer in a Cougar than in other competitors.
The specification is also class-leading, with ABS and traction control, front electric windows, air conditioning, and a standard immobilizer/alarm. At this ratio, the basic V6 adds a better stereo, leather seats, and metallic paint (although you are quite restricted in color choice).
So, there you have it. Big, safe, well-equipped, and with a pair of better-than-average engines. If you like the image of a coupe but dont want the drawbacks, Cougar makes a good choice.
