This is the second Ford C-Max, one of the ten models Ford will replace on its new global C platform - there is a larger Grand C-Max, three Focus models, plus hybrid and electric versions, and by 2012 it will "underpin 2 million units annually.
It is the new Grand C-Max that will take the name in North America and will satisfy 60% of UK customers who Ford claims now want the option of six or seven seats, but it is the smallest C-Max we have tried. Read on for CARs first review of the new Ford C-Max 1.6 TDCI vehicle.
So, is the new Ford C-Max good to drive?
Of course, Ford CMax 2011-2015 engines. With each successive generation of Focus original Ford CMax 2011-2015 auto parts, Ford seems to move further away from fun Ford CMax 2011-201 engines and refinement, but this is really a car you will enjoy driving. Never has the CAR office fought so hard for the keys to an MPV and never has every member handed over the fob the next day accompanied by words like "excellent" and "great" Ford CMax 2011-2015 auto parts.
The new original Ford C-Max (2011-2015) fully electric steering saves fuel and is not as good as before, but after you have adjusted to the first quarter of lock, you will find a sharp and incisive system, without confusing interference. Drivers coming from other MPVs will really need to calibrate.
It also flows very well Ford C-Max (2011-2015) auto parts. Whether its a fast A-road, a bumpy B-road, or simply crossing a roundabout, the C-Max always operates in sync. It is easy and comfortable to absorb surface imperfections, but it is controlled so that you do not respond or float up and down. It is also a quiet, refined, and easy cruiser.
The only thing in which this C-Max Ford C-Max (2011-2015) engines is not fast. It has only 81 HP/ton and will be even slower once loaded with kids and all their gear. You could go for Fords new Ecoboost engines (gasoline units that combine direct injection and turbocharging), but diesel engines will always offer much more miles per gallon: we recommend the 2.0 TDCi for 1000 euros if you can stretch to it.
Fords torque vectoring control system is also standard across the entire C-Max range and uses the vehicles braking system to mimic the effect of a proper torque diffuser. Load through a tight corner, and the front wheel is braked, sending more engine torque to the outer wheel. Whether your average driver will ever feel the benefits or if it is necessary on a slow diesel MPV is debatable, but it will be excellent for the Focus ST.
What about the new Ford C-Max?
Lets split this part in two and start at the front where mom and dad will sit. The driving position is quite perfect, high enough to offer a decent view over the traffic, but low enough so you never feel perched. A large windshield means lots of light and visibility, although the thick D-pillar creates a big blind spot.
Like the regular Focus, there is a huge range of plastics, the best of which are squid top looks, while the worst are just average. There is also a riot of shapes, and after the simplicity of a Touran kind, the C-Max initially intimidates. There are too many small buttons, which do not feel different enough, so you are forced to look down to find them, then look at the small display screen at the top of the dashboard, then refocus on the road. Best to use the wheel-mounted controls when you can or leave the other half to control the radio.
And if youre not the driver?
The back half of the C-Max is quite conventional. There are two versions of Fords Scenic rival, the C-Max we tested here and the Grand C-Max. The latter features a 140mm longer wheelbase, a 58mm higher roofline, sliding doors, and seven seats, so its ideal if you have a large family.
The regular C-Max is simpler: there are conventional doors and only five seats, with the rear row split 40/20/40 and able to fold. Fords Comfort system is an option, which allows the central seat to fold and the outer seats to slide back and for more space. Smart, but not much smarter than a Focus Estate. From past experience, Ford knows that the C-Max sells to older couples who like the high position; the Grand C-Max is the one for moms and dads whose kids havent flown the nest yet.
Verdict
There is a lot to like here, but a Focus Estate will be just as capable and more fun to drive, and the Grand C-Max is a more flexible car for a large family. Buy a C-Max and you will get an excellent MPV, but its problems come from within: Ford makes so many other great cars.
